Job description

We’re hiring a Director of Data to make data the indisputable engine of our results and market differentiation. The next chapter of Spoiler Alert is defined by how well we turn our marketplace data into better outcomes for our suppliers and buyers, resulting in platform value and analytics that compounds with every transaction.

This is a hands-on, cross-functional leadership role for someone who has done this work before in the CPG-retail world and built data teams that drive business outcomes. You’ll own the customer-facing analytics that make our platform more valuable, the insights that show us how to make the marketplace more valuable to suppliers and buyers, and the team behind both. You’ll partner closely with Product on what we build, Operations on how we advise our customers, and GTM on how we effectively bring our category and aggregated insights to the market.

You will be expected to bring an expert, outside-in point of view on where CPG and retail data practices are headed. You’ll lead a small team of analysts and have the opportunity to grow the team to match the ambition of the role. This role is a member of the Product leadership team and will partner closely with the senior leadership team and Product, Engineering, Operations, and GTM teams., * Partner with the VP of Product on the data strategy that drives results for suppliers and buyers, network effects across the marketplace, and compounding platform differentiation - including the embeddable, customer-facing analytics (aggregated insights, pricing intelligence, performance benchmarks, applied AI/ML) that deepen platform stickiness

  • Equip Operations with the data and intelligence to advise customers on best-in-class liquidation strategies
  • Identify and develop the commercial value of our data - including new data-driven products and premium offerings
  • Draw on your CPG and retail data fluency to shape product opportunities and customer-facing intelligence suppliers and buyers will value and act on.
  • Evaluate strategic data partnerships and technical investments that accelerate our roadmap, including liaising with other CPG and retail tech companies, * Define and maintain the marketplace liquidity metrics that matter, and deliver clear, accessible monitors that drive decisions for Operations, Product, GTM, Senior Leadership, and the Board of Directors
  • Strengthen and scale how Spoiler Alert uses data and AI/ML in everyday decisions and execution, with internal adoption, accessibility, and impact as the measures of success
  • Partner across the leadership team using data and AI with Product on what problems to prioritize, Engineering on how to solve them, Operations and Account Management to improve customer outcomes, and GTM to drive revenue.
  • Contribute to external thought leadership, including the publishing of aggregated insights and category analyses, as well as participation in webinar and speaking opportunities

Build the Team & Foundations

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team with a culture of ownership, analytical rigor, and business impact, growing team members into partners who influence decisions across the company
  • Partner with Engineering and senior leadership to ensure data quality, consistency, and accessibility can support how the company and our customers want to use data and AI

Requirements

Do you have experience in Team development?, * 7-10+ years in analytics or data science, with 3+ years leading data teams - ideally at a high-growth B2B SaaS, marketplace, or data products company

  • Direct experience with CPG and/or retail data: the metrics suppliers and buyers use, and how it moves and gets used between manufacturers, distributors, and retailers
  • Experience differentiators: category management, pricing optimization, demand planning, applied AI/ML, supply chain management, auction theory, retail media
  • Track record of shipping customer-facing data products that drive measurable customer and business value - not just dashboards, but decisions and value
  • Commercial instinct for where data creates business value - including new products, premium offerings, or partnerships
  • Hands-on comfort with SQL and the modern data stack - close to the work alongside the team and a credible partner to Engineering
  • Hands-on expertise to coach and collaborate with data team members across the stack, from dbt, SQL, semantic modeling languages, and data visualization in BI tools to python, pandas, jupyter notebooks, and LLMs in AI/ML tools.
  • Power user of AI with an ambitious and pragmatic viewpoint on its impact within retail and CPG including expert insight on where the modern data stack and AI/ML products are heading
  • Track record of hiring and developing strong analysts
  • Cross-functional credibility with Product, Engineering, GTM, and senior leadership; brings clarity in ambiguity and drives decisions
  • Operates with a bias for action and communicates data clearly to a wide variety of stakeholders
