Data Architect

We are a scaling telecommunications fiber installation company looking for a Lead Systems Architect & Data Integrator to overhaul, streamline, and automate our operational technology stack. Over the past 10 years, our data (HR records, fleet logs, and field projects) has accumulated in a disorganized “junk drawer” inside Google Drive. We need a strategic technical leader to audit this legacy data, clean it up, and build a highly automated, modern data ecosystem.

Our current vision is a synchronized ecosystem using Paychex as our absolute source of truth for hiring, employee onboarding, and finishing payroll processing, and PenguinData Systems for workforce management, fleet/asset tracking, and daily operations. However, we want an expert who can objectively evaluate this setup. If you can architect a superior, more efficient custom solution or integration framework, you will have the autonomy and budget to build it.

Core Responsibilities

Tech Stack Optimization & Workflow Automation

• Streamline the employee lifecycle: Architect a seamless pipeline where a new hire onboarded in Paychex automatically triggers account creation, fleet assignment, and profile syncing inside PenguinData.
• Integrate core systems: Build and maintain reliable data pipelines (via APIs, webhooks, or custom middleware) between Paychex, PenguinData, and QuickBooks.
• Evaluate alternative solutions: Critically assess our software landscape. If a custom data platform or alternative software integration provides a higher ROI, pitch and execute that vision.

Legacy Triage & Data Migration

• Audit and extract a decade of legacy HR, fleet, and operational files sitting loosely in Google Drive.
• Cleanse and map this unstructured data so it can be cleanly ingested into PenguinData’s HR and Fleet/Asset modules or archived securely.
• Eliminate duplicate systems by migrating “random” localized spreadsheets into the centralized architecture.

Data Governance & Internal Standards

• Establish automated data entry guards so field crews and office staff cannot re-clutter the system moving forward.
• Define strict data security and compliance protocols, ensuring sensitive payroll (Paychex) and field operations data are securely ring-fenced.

Do you have experience in Zapier?, * Experience: 6+ years as a Data Architect, Systems Analyst, or Solutions Architect-ideally in an entrepreneurial, fast-growing environment.

• Automation & Integration Expertise: Advanced capability in connecting cloud platforms via REST APIs and automation tools (e.g., Python scripting, Zapier, Make, or custom ETL tools).
• Platform Familiarity: High familiarity with core HRIS/Payroll tools (Paychex) and industry operations platforms (PenguinData, or similar field service ERPs). []
• Analytical & Consultative Mindset: Proven ability to look at messy business processes, design a cleaner architectural blueprint, and confidently advise executive leadership on tool selection.
• Industry Context: Background in telecom, fiber construction, utilities, or logistics involving physical fleets and field personnel is highly desired.

Pay: $120,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
