Job description

  • Reporting to the Director of Web Development, the Web Developer is responsible for creating, maintaining and enhancing the Winthrop website, including managing editorial and graphic content, refining navigation and presentation of information, ensuring accessibility, and training web authors.
  • Uses PC-based software to develop design concepts for implementation and graphics for online use. Offers technical assistance to individuals and departments on using the content management system (CMS), managing web content, and incorporating features.
  • Provides one-to-one and group CMS training for campus authors.
  • Discusses all projects and assignments with supervisor, gathers specifications from on-campus customers, and ensures information flow and timely progress to completion.
  • Ensures website compatibility across browsers, platforms, and devices.
  • Troubleshoots web pages, verifies and corrects links, and performs periodic code audits.
  • Stays current on Internet trends/news and researches emerging technologies.
  • Assists with search engine optimization, tracking and analytics, accessibility compliance, and code documentation.
  • Locates photos needed for website creation using Mac-based digital archives.

Requirements

Extensive knowledge of the procedures and techniques of designing, organizing, troubleshooting and maintaining websites to ensure usability, accessibility and ease of navigation. Knowledge of HTML5, XML, XSL, CSS3, Javascript and jQuery coding. Extensive knowledge of principal computer hardware and web-authoring software programs. Proven ability to communicate effectively with groups, individuals and in training situations, including ability to explain technical jargon in layman’s terms. Understanding of public relations procedures and institutional sensitivities characteristic of a higher education environment. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Effective interpersonal skills.
