Job description

STAFFXPERT LLC is seeking a Linux Systems Engineer on behalf of our client in Salt Lake City, Utah to support a large-scale server migration initiative. This role is ideal for an experienced systems engineer with strong expertise in Linux infrastructure, virtualization, storage technologies, and automation. The selected candidate will play a critical role in maintaining a secure, stable, and high-performing Linux compute platform throughout all migration phases. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with Linux systems engineering, VMware virtualization, iSCSI storage, Logical Volume Management (LVM), container platforms, and infrastructure automation in enterprise-scale environments. Key Responsibilities Engineer and support Linux compute platforms during server migration activities, ensuring system stability, performance, and security. Plan, coordinate, and execute end-to-end server migrations across physical infrastructure, virtual environments, and data center locations. Manage and support VMware ESXi/vSphere environments, including VM provisioning, host administration, high availability, and workload mobility. Configure, troubleshoot, and optimize iSCSI storage connectivity, multipathing, and authentication mechanisms. Administer and maintain LVM configurations, including volume management, resizing, snapshots, and migration support. Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to streamline migration and operational workflows. Create migration runbooks, rollback procedures, validation plans, and operational documentation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess migration readiness and implement technical solutions. Support modern infrastructure environments, including Kubernetes, OpenShift, and containerized workloads. Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues during and after migration efforts. Improve platform reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency. Support CI/CD initiatives and infrastructure automation practices. Monitor system performance and proactively optimize Linux-based environments. Ensure compliance with security standards and operational best practices. Required Qualifications

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. 4+ years of hands-on experience in Linux Systems Engineering. 4+ years of experience supporting large-scale server or data center migration projects, including physical-to-virtual (P2V), virtual-to-virtual (V2V), or site-to-site migrations. Strong expertise in Linux operating systems, Linux internals, and enterprise compute environments. Proven experience with VMware ESXi/vSphere, including: Host builds and administration Virtual machine provisioning vMotion and Storage vMotion DRS and High Availability (HA) Strong understanding of iSCSI storage networking, multipathing, and troubleshooting. Advanced experience with Logical Volume Manager (LVM), including snapshots, volume management, and migration support. Strong networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and firewalls. Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, including: Kubernetes OpenShift Docker Experience with CI/CD and automation tools such as Git, Maven, and Jenkins. Strong scripting experience using Bash and Python. Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional environments. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in enterprise-scale infrastructure or data center environments. Familiarity with infrastructure automation and DevOps methodologies. Exposure to hybrid infrastructure and modern platform engineering practices.
