GIS Support Steward - Grand Canyon National Park

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career internship opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS GIS office is hosting a cohort of GIS stewards., Grand Canyon National Park seeks a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Steward to support the Park’s Facility Management and Engineering Division. This position plays a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the park’s facilities and asset GIS data infrastructure, developing and deploying field data collection applications, and providing GIS support for project planning and development. The Steward will assist with field verification of utilities infrastructure, digitization of as-built construction plans, and integration of spatial data into project workflows for South and North Rim facilities and Inner Canyon operations. This role involves collaboration with planners, engineers, and resource specialists to ensure accurate geospatial data for decision-making and compliance with NPS standards., As a GIS Steward for Grand Canyon’s Facility Management and Engineering Division, the incumbent will serve as a GIS technical assistant to the Engineering Service staff in the development, management, integration, and implementation of GIS. Typical project work includes:

• GIS Data Infrastructure Management
• Maintain and update geospatial databases for utilities, facilities, and infrastructure assets.
• Ensure compliance with NPS data standards and requirements.
• Field Data Collection and Verification
• Conduct field verification of utilities infrastructure using GPS-enabled devices and GIS applications
• Collect and validate spatial data for South Rim and Inner Canyon Projects.
• Field Application Development
• Design and configure mobile GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123) for data collection and project workflows.
• Test and deploy apps for use by park staff and contractors.
• Digitization and Integration
• Digitize as-built construction plans and integrate them into GIS systems.
• Georeference drawings and ensure accurate spatial representation of utility features.
• Project Development Support
• Provide GIS analysis and mapping support for project managers and engineers.
• Prepare maps, reports, and visualizations for planning, compliance, and decision-making.
• Quality Assurance and Quality Control
• Perform QA/QC on spatial data and maintain documentation of workflows. Update metadata and ensure data integrity across systems., * Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours per week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
• Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

• Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Do you have experience in Technical writing within technology?, Do you have a High school diploma or GED?, * United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien

• Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess a solid foundation in GIS principles, skills, and data management practices and be able to demonstrate proficiency in producing well-designed cartographic products and using the current suite of Esri ArcGIS software and tools. This position requires strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills, including technical writing and presenting. Candidates must be self-motivated and comfortable reaching out to coworkers or technical specialists as needed and working independently after an initial training period.

Applicants who have obtained or are pursuing a GIS degree or certificate and/or with GIS experience are preferred. • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395.00
• Living Allowance of $600 per week.
• Additional Benefit of $480 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
