Job description
As the GIS Coordinator for the Department of Environmental Quality, you will play a key role in supporting the agency’s mission through the effective management, analysis, and application of geospatial data and technologies. This position serves as the department’s lead GIS resource, ensuring geospatial information is accurate, accessible, and effectively utilized to support environmental programs, decision-making, and public engagement.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and coordinate the department’s GIS program, ensuring the effective, ethical, and efficient use of geospatial technologies to support environmental protection and regulatory programs.
- Serve as the primary steward of the department’s geospatial datasets and GIS Hub resources, maintaining data quality, integrity, accessibility, and compliance with established quality assurance standards.
- Conduct geospatial analyses, research, and data development projects that support environmental monitoring, assessment, planning, reporting, and decision-making.
- Provide technical expertise, training, and support to department staff in the use of GIS tools, data visualization, and spatial analysis to enhance program effectiveness.
- Represent the department on the State Geospatial Committee and collaborate with federal, state, local, tribal, and other partners on geospatial initiatives, data-sharing efforts, and environmental projects.
- Serve as North Dakota’s Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) Steward, maintaining watershed boundary data in accordance with U.S. Geological Survey standards and coordinating with hydrographic partners to improve statewide datasets.
- Develop maps, reports, web-based GIS resources, and technical communications for agency programs and public audiences, and conduct field work as needed to support GIS-related projects.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Mapping using GIS?, Do you have a Bachelor’s degree?, To succeed in this position, you should have strong technical knowledge of GIS principles, geospatial data management, and spatial analysis techniques. You should be skilled at working with complex datasets, maintaining data quality standards, and communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Success in this role also requires strong collaboration skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build productive relationships with internal staff, partner agencies, and stakeholders while supporting the department’s environmental protection mission., Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships., Bachelor’s degree in natural, environmental, or physical sciences and 3 years of experience developing integrating, implementing, and maintaining GIS technologies and applications.
