Staff Software Engineer - Eater Growth

Uber Eats has expanded beyond restaurants to support grocery, retail, and other emerging categories across global markets. The Early User Growth organization focuses on how new users discover, onboard, and engage with Uber Eats, driving sustainable and retentive growth across surfaces and early lifecycle journeys., We are hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to shape and evolve the core systems powering Growth initiatives. In this role, you will define backend architecture, shared services, and experimentation infrastructure used across multiple teams. You will partner closely with Product, Design, and Data Science to translate complex business opportunities into scalable, reliable technical solutions serving millions of users.

This role requires strong architectural judgment, experience operating distributed systems at scale, and the ability to influence technical direction beyond a single team.

What You Will Do

1. Lead the design and evolution of core backend systems powering Early User Growth initiatives.
2. Define and drive platform architecture, APIs, and shared services used across multiple teams.
3. Partner with Product, Design, and Data Science to deliver scalable solutions that enable rapid experimentation.
4. Own system reliability, scalability, and long-term maintainability of Growth services.
5. Influence technical direction through design reviews, mentorship, and engineering best practices.
6. Improve experimentation velocity while maintaining high standards for operational excellence.

1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field
2. 7+ years of full-time Software Engineering experience
3. Proven experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production
4. Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and system design
5. Experience designing scalable APIs, data models, and backend workflows
6. Experience with microservice architectures
7. Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams
8. Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, Go, Python, or C+—- Preferred Qualifications —-
9. Experience building growth, onboarding, or experimentation systems
10. Experience designing A/B testing frameworks and measurement strategies
11. Experience building shared platform services used by multiple product teams
12. Background in consumer-facing applications at scale
13. Experience in a two- or three-sided marketplace
14. Experience working on Search, Feed, ranking, or personalization systems

For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year. For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp.
