Job description

The job posting is subject to final approval of the project by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) which is expected shortly. In the event of approval, BMWE will fund, among others, two research associates (pay grade E 13) at the ASN Group, University of Kassel. The work will be carried out in cooperation with industrial project partners. The position is initially limited until 31 December 2028 in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG. The opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree (PhD) is given.

At the Automation and Sensorics in Networked Systems (ASN) Group, methods from automatic control, artificial intelligence, and networked systems are combined. A major application focus of our work are complex energy systems with a high share of decentralized, uncertain, and renewable generation. Our goal is to enable future low-carbon energy systems that support sustainable economies.

As part of the new research project "IntelliEMEs", an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS) is being developed for multimodal building energy systems with a high share of renewable energy sources. The EMS is intended to efficiently coordinate generation, consumption, and storage while accounting for uncertainties in energy production and use. Modern methods from automatic control, artificial intelligence, and stochastic optimization will be employed to ensure safe and efficient operation. The developed approaches will be validated both in simulations and in a real-world pilot installation. To carry out this project, we are seeking dedicated and motivated researchers.

Tasks:

  • Research activities within the above-mentioned project, focusing on energy management for sector-coupled energy systems.
  • Developing and implementing methods for automatic model identification, state observation and fault detection, as well as adaptive reconfiguration of energy management systems.
  • Applying stochastic methods for predictive control of complex energy systems.
  • Defining and pursuing an independent research focus within the project's thematic scope.
  • Building and using research infrastructure (e.g., simulation servers, lab experiments, digital twins).
  • Contributing to academic activities within the department and assisting in the supervision of students.
  • Preparing scientific publications and presenting research results at conferences., * you will be offered an interesting and diverse range of tasks within the framework of a modern and ambitious university,
  • you will be part of an interdisciplinary team with a good and collegial working atmosphere,
  • you will have the opportunity to participate in professional and interdisciplinary further education measures,
  • is your workplace with good connections to public transport, which you can currently use free of charge.

In addition, you will benefit from the advantages of employment in the public service such as:

  • an additional company pension (VBL),
  • an optional child supplement in accordance with TV-Hessen, a family-friendly university (including childcare for emergencies),
  • an annual bonus
  • an entitlement to capital-accumulation benefits,
  • a promotion of voluntary commitment,
  • low-cost participation in university sports and a full range of fitness activities as part of Unifit, as well as workplace health management
