Job description
As our platform scales and our customer base expands globally, we're investing heavily in the reliability, performance, and scalability of our data layer. We're looking for a Lead SQL DBA to take ownership of our Azure SQL estate and play a key role in driving the next phase of our data platform's evolution.
This is a hands-on leadership role focused on keeping our multi-tenant, cross-region SaaS platform running safely and efficiently. You'll ensure our databases are performant, secure, and built to scale, identify and implement improvements, and coach & mentor the wider team on database best practice. This is an opportunity to utilise your understanding and experience of 'what good looks like' to our evolving tech landscape
Collaborating closely with engineering, infrastructure, and security teams, you'll be a leading influence on how we shape database strategy, strengthen observability, and guide the business toward greater automation and operational excellence.
This is a role where your expertise will make a meaningful impact within our Tech4Good product environment. Where your contribution, voice and new ideas will be strongly valued ad where your work will have a direct impact on customer experience, powering everything from transactional performance to analytics and reporting.
If you're passionate about database performance, enjoy balancing technical depth with strategic influence, and want to play a pivotal role in the future of a growing SaaS platform, we'd love to hear from you!
What We're Looking For:
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and operation of secure, resilient Azure SQL environments for a multi-tenant, cross-region SaaS platform.
- Define the long-term roadmap for database reliability, scalability, and performance, aligning with technology and product strategy.
- Oversee database security posture, ensuring encryption, access controls, auditing, and compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g. GDPR).
- Enhance and validate disaster recovery processes to ensure RPO and RTO objectives are met through regular, automated testing.
- Drive automation and standardisation across database deployment, monitoring, and maintenance processes to improve reliability, safety, and delivery speed.
- Monitor and optimise database performance, capacity, and cost efficiency across regions by building strong observability around key metrics, baselines, and alerts.
- Identify, tune, and optimise database queries, indexes, and stored procedures to maintain high performance for large-scale transactional workloads.
- Lead database incident response, coordinating investigation, resolution, and post-incident reviews to strengthen resilience and prevent recurrence.
- Define and implement data lifecycle policies that control growth, reduce storage costs, and meet legal and operational retention requirements.
- Act as a mentor and advocate for SQL excellence, guiding teams on data modelling, access patterns, and architectural standards to ensure scalable, maintainable, and well-aligned designs.
- Line-manage, coach, and develop other DBAs, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and a shared sense of ownership
- Contribute to the design, governance, and evolution of the Azure Fabric Lakehouse to deliver secure, scalable, and well-modelled data foundations for analytics across internal and customer domains.
