Job description

You will work across our entire product & technology stack to help us deliver the best product to our thousands of customers worldwide. You will develop features to increase the core value proposition of our product and help cement our place as the leading Workforce Management and Payroll product in the UK. You will lead by example by setting a high standard in your work. Our platform is built using Ruby on Rails, a popular web application framework that powers some of the biggest names in tech such as Github, Gusto, BuildKite, CultureAmp, and Shopify. We also use Javascript, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker in our stack. We're a bootstrapped company that has been funded by customers for over a decade. We're still growing fast, and there are plenty of exciting challenges for developers to take on, with real outcomes and benefits for both yourself and the business. A few of the big problems we've tackled recently:

  • Building a new payroll product for the UK market from scratch
  • Rebuilding our mobile app using new technology and deploying to close to 200k users (while contributing to the state of the art along the way!)
  • Scaling our web app to support more users in a single account, and decreasing our timeouts by a third Refreshing our infrastructure; exploring database sharding & horizontal scaling, the move to K8sRe-architecting our award interpretation service while still performing hundreds of thousands of accurate calculations a day
  • Running Ruby on Rails at the edge - following in the steps of companies like Github, Shopify & Stripe

Requirements

Do you have experience in Software development?, We're seeking an ambitious Intermediate Software Engineer with hands-on experience building products to join our London team., * 4+ years experience in software development with a background working for a Product or SaaS company preferred

  • Deep expertise in at least one component of our stack (full stack knowledge although ideal is not expected and can be taught)
  • You look to build and automate quality into our tech stack in the areas you know well e.g. by helping improve tooling
  • Strong interpersonal skills to complement established team cohesion and collaboration
  • No degree or formal qualification is required

Benefits & conditions

Within your first year, you'll:

  • Build knowledge about our codebase and business domain
  • Be involved in building (and maybe even lead) several features for our products - at the start you'll have support as you learn the code base, and after a year we expect you to be solving problems more autonomously without as much guidance.
  • Participate in your first on-call rotation Grow the scope of what you work on rapidly

Why Apply? See your impact We're a small engineering team, but our product is global. You can personally have a huge impact on our customers' productivity. We're not always sprinting Our development cycle uses the Shape Up framework. Unlike a lot of "agile" frameworks - we have dedicated 'cool-down' time to breathe; using it to fix bugs, refactor, focus on professional development, and try out new technical possibilities. Experience amazing opportunities We recognise when people are exceptional, and as a scale-up, we're flexible enough to give people new opportunities to excel in both existing and new teams/roles. Solve deep and interesting problems Workforce management is an innovative industry, and creative solutions are a necessity to thrive. Working at Workforce.com We hire people that want to work with people. We have around 4 socials a year, including an epic Christmas party. We have an International team that we interact with. Sometimes they visit us, and occasionally team members visit them. While it's not guaranteed every year - performance pending - our last 4 years we have had retreats in Madrid, Bratislava, Varna and Malaga. We are based in London, and we work at the office every day. Barista coffee, tea, beer, cereal, fruit, and snacks are all included.
