This role combines operational oversight with people leadership, driving optimisation initiatives and embedding good practices to enhance performance and resilience. By leveraging data-driven insights, you will ensure platforms meet evolving business needs while maintaining high standards of reliability and cost-effectiveness.

A core responsibility of this role is leading and motivating a team of Platform Operations Engineers to deliver exceptional operational outcomes. You will be adept at fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement, empowering engineers to innovate and adopt modern practices. You will provide clear direction, remove obstacles, and create an environment where teams can thrive, ensuring alignment with technology roadmaps and business objectives.

In addition to team leadership, you'll undertake proactive risk management, incident response, and guiding the integration of legacy and modern systems. You'll champion security and compliance, establish governance frameworks, and hold internal teams and third-party vendors accountable to relevant standards. Through strong leadership and technical insight, you will enable operational evolution and maintain a robust platform foundation for future growth., * Operational Strategy & Leadership: Lead the implementation of strategies for optimising platform operations. Guide teams in maintaining and enhancing infrastructure.

  • Drive continuous improvement of the function adopting leading ITIL and cloud practices to ensure secure, resilient, responsive and customer centric service delivery. Identifying areas where automation can improve efficiency and resilience.
  • Work closely across the Enterprise Cloud Services group to ensure the delivery of exceptional customer experience, coordinating with support teams, customer success leads and product engineering and development.
  • Vendor & External Service Management: Manage relationships with third-parties to deliver the infrastructure, maintenance and operational needs of the platform service. Support contract management, service-level agreements and vendor performance reviews.
  • Performance Monitoring & Improvement: Monitor performance metrics and implement data-driven strategies to improve efficiency, scalability and capacity. Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational processes, adopt new technologies and support future needs of the entire platform services.
  • Risk & Compliance Management: Oversee risk management across platform services and implement strategies to identify and mitigate potential issues proactively.
  • Modernisation & Integration: Lead the modernisation of platform infrastructure, guiding the integration of new technologies and optimising legacy systems., We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

Requirements

Do you have experience in Presentation skills?, Have you got experience of leading a multi-skilled function within a Cloud focused organization?

Do you have experience in running a diverse and distributed team of engineers across multiple cloud providers; leading direction and strategy in a key business function?

Do you want to play a key role in delivering reliable, secure, and efficient platforms that provide services for millions of citizens?

We are looking for an established leader who can effectively and sensitively handle the expectations, and meet the needs, of a range of customers with varying and sophisticated needs., * Extensive experience in Platform or Operations Management.

  • Demonstrable experience managing teams blended from internal and external people.
  • Appreciation of security and compliance protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in guiding integration, and migration, of legacy systems with modern platforms.
  • Ability to use data-driven insights to drive improvements.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with Monitoring & Observability tooling.
  • Exposure to configuration management tools.
  • Awareness of FinOps and cloud cost management.
  • Cloud related certifications.
  • Familiarity with the principles behind ITIL service operations., Customer facing roles in HMRC require the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English and/or Welsh where required. Where this is an essential requirement, this will be tested as part of the selection process.
