Job description

The Systems Integration Engineer will play a pivotal role within Lear's regional Innovation Hub, operating under the EU & Africa Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of manufacturing, digitalisation, and technology deployment, collaborating closely with Subject Matter Experts across Manufacturing, Logistics, Quality, and IT.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in systems engineering, automation, and digital integration, with a passion for connecting disparate technologies into cohesive, scalable solutions. The Systems Integration Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing integrated systems that enhance operational efficiency, data visibility, and process control across Lear's regional operations.

This is a hands-on, solution-focused role ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic environments, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and is driven by the impact of real-world engineering applications. From concept to deployment, the engineer will lead integration efforts for Industry 4.0 technologies, including IoT, MES, ERP interfaces, and smart automation systems

Key Responsibilities:

System Integration Design:

  • Architect and implement integration solutions between diverse technologies (e.g., IoT devices, cloud platforms, AI models, control systems).
  • Understand complex systems across Hardware, Software and process layers.
  • Define and manage data flows, APIs, and communication protocols.

Integration & Interoperability:

  • Proficiency in integrating diverse technologies (e.g., PLCs, IoT devices, MES, ERP systems).
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (OPC UA, MQTT, REST APIs).

Software & Automation

  • Programming/scripting skills (Python, C++, Java, or similar).
  • Familiarity with automation platforms (Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff) and industrial software (Ignition, Kepware, TwinCAT).
  • Experience with edge computing and cloud integration (Azure, AWS, etc.).

Middleware and API Development:

  • Develop and maintain middleware components and APIs to enable modular system design.
  • Ensure secure and efficient data exchange between components.

Technical Coordination:

  • Collaborate with software developers, hardware engineers, and data scientists to align interfaces and system requirements.
  • Troubleshoot integration issues and ensure system compatibility.
  • Evaluate emerging control technologies (edge computing, AI-based control, etc.)
  • Support feasibility studies and POC development
  • Create integration maps, interface specifications, and technical documentation

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with teams in Manufacturing, Logistics, Quality, and IT to understand operational needs and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Build and manage relationships with external partners, including universities, research institutions, and suppliers, to foster collaboration and access new technologies or knowledge

Requirements

  • Confidence in presenting and interfacing with senior stakeholders from multi-cultural backgrounds and functional disciplines
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel within the role.
  • Analytical and critical thinking: Strong analytical skills to understand business processes and requirements.
  • Lean thinker: understands the benefits of standardisation and can explain clearly when challenged.
  • Minimum of 3+ years work experience in Manufacturing
  • Ability to apply both academic and practical thinking to real-world tech challenges.
  • Preferably experience in smart factory initiatives, IoT projects, digital transformation projects.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • Fluency in English language both written and verbal.
  • Ideally a Masters in a related engineering / technical field although a Bachelor's degree with relevant work experience may be considered
