Job description
We are looking for an IT Infrastructure Engineer ready to take the next step in their career. You will be a key member of our IT team, helping to manage our multi-site IT environment and providing essential technical support.
This is a hands-on role where you'll work across on-premises systems, Azure cloud services, networking, and end-user security. You'll help ensure the stability, security, and scalability of our infrastructure, while supporting around 120 endpoints and 80 users across:
- 2 UK offices (Norwich & Cambridge)
- Remote users in the UK, Australia, Singapore, and the USA
- Cloud infrastructure hosted in Azure
You'll be joining a growing IT function that currently consists of two Infrastructure and Support Engineers, acting as a key technical escalation point and working collaboratively with the team.
This role is a unique opportunity to gain deep, hands-on experience in a secure big data environment, supporting multi-terabyte databases and healthcare research systems. This is the perfect position for a 3rd-line engineer looking to grow into a senior-level specialist in cloud, networking, and security.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and support Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy across multiple sites.
- Maintain Azure AD / Entra ID integration and hybrid identity.
- Support Windows Server environments (virtual and physical).
- Assist with managing networking, VLANs, VPNs, and site-to-site connectivity (Fortinet firewalls).
- Administer and monitor Microsoft 365 and Intune (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, device management).
- Provide 3rd-line escalation for IT support tickets.
- Assist in operating and monitoring the SIEM platform, ensuring proactive detection and response to security events.
- Support endpoint protection and patching across servers and clients, including Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
- Help run, and report on internal and external vulnerability scans, following up with remediation.
- Support and maintain secure RDS jump boxes for external client access, both on-premises and in the cloud.
- Support infrastructure projects and proactively identify areas for improvement.
- Help ensure compliance with security standards (ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus).
- Document systems, procedures, and create user guides.
Requirements
Do you have experience in IT support?, Essential:
- Strong experience with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy.
- Proven background with multi-site Windows environments.
- Hands-on Microsoft 365 administration, including Azure AD / Entra ID and Intune.
- Good understanding of networking fundamentals (subnets, VLANs, routing).
- Experience with virtualisation (Hyper-V/VMware).
- Strong troubleshooting and 3rd-line support capability.
- A proactive mindset and a strong desire to learn new technologies.
Desirable:

- Exposure to Fortinet firewalls (configuration, VPNs).
- A strong interest in cybersecurity (SIEM, vulnerability management).
- Exposure to ISO 27001 / Cyber Essentials Plus audits.
- Scripting/automation skills (PowerShell).
- Exposure to secure remote access (RDS/Jump Boxes)., * IT support: 5 years (required)

Our anonymised research database, OPC Research Database (OPCRD), is one of the largest electronic health record databases in the world for research use, with over 17 million anonymised patients.
