Job description
As a Senior BI Data Engineer, you will play an impactful role in shaping our capability by delivering projects that enable the future of Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), analytics, reporting, and marketing campaign selections and personalisation. Depending on your expertise, you'll focus on either transforming and maturing our existing BI platforms (such as Microsoft SQL Server) or our Snowflake data warehouse platform to enable data products in support of an organisational transformation programme to modernise our CRM and associated technologies as part of our Engage Strategy (go live in 2026/27).
You'll work closely with engineering teams and business stakeholders to evolve and enhance our BI data platform and data products. Your responsibilities will include delivering robust BI integrations, maintaining star-schema data models, and managing priorities and new requests, whilst ensuring exceptional service quality. In addition, you'll play a senior role in shaping design patterns and transformation strategies that align with user needs and business objectives. As a mentor and guide, you'll help the team build expertise, resilience, and best practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What will I be doing?
- Delivering BI data engineering initiatives according to the priorities set by the Data Enabler initiative.
- These will be assigned based on the successful candidate's skillset, with a predominant focus on either supporting business-as-usual (BAU) work to build and maintain our BI platform or helping to deliver our data platform capability in support of our Siebel to Salesforce migration.
- Collaborating closely with the requirements owner to identify end-user needs.
- Producing and reviewing designs following the Cancer Research UK architecture models and agreed design patterns in collaboration with the BI Solutions Architect.
- Developing new and enhanced solutions in line with IT strategy, making recommendations for prioritisation, and identifying opportunities for increased stability, efficiency, and improvements.
- Collaborating with Quality Assurance to ensure that test plans and cases are targeted effectively, as well as providing iterative builds for testing against prioritised requirements.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to plan releases from development to production environments, ensuring stability and minimal disruption.
- Provide 3rd line support for production services.
- Supporting the Lead BI Data Engineer in fostering team growth through learning initiatives, development planning, and recruitment.
Requirements
- Experienced BI Data Engineer with experience owning data warehouse products from model design, delivery, release & support in large, complex organisations.
- Strong understanding and experience of CRM purpose, architecture, and back-end data structures.
- Engineered scalable and reliable pipelines with knowledge of ETL/ELT concepts, patterns, and CI/CD pipelines.
Development experience of:
- AWS cloud components (including ECS Fargate, Python CDK, and CodeBuild / CodePipeline).
- Microsoft BI technologies with a focus on SSIS, SSAS, and Power BI is an advantage.
- Well versed in source version control using Git.
- Strong understanding of user needs with the ability to translate them into effective data models, patterns, and transformation strategies that align with business objectives.
