Job description
As a Backend Developer (Laravel), you'll architect and maintain scalable backend systems that support our growing eCommerce operations and internal tools. You'll work closely with frontend developers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver features that matter - writing clean, maintainable code while contributing to the technical direction of the platform.
This is a full-time, permanent role. Remote candidates are welcome, and UK-based developers can choose a hybrid setup.
What You'll Do:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend features using PHP 7.4 and Laravel 8.4
- Build and maintain APIs and integrations with services like Redis, RabbitMQ, and Elasticsearch
- Collaborate with frontend engineers using Vue.js and Nuxt.js
- Optimize code for speed, security, and maintainability
- Write automated tests and debug issues across multiple environments
- Take ownership of tasks and projects, managing priorities independently
- Contribute to architecture decisions and technical strategy with the team
Requirements
- 2+ years experience with Laravel and PHP-based backend development
- Strong experience building and consuming APIs
- Solid understanding of SQL databases and database optimisation
- Familiarity with queues, caching, and background processing (e.g., Redis, Horizon, RabbitMQ)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Passion for clean, readable code and continuous learning
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Elasticsearch or App Search
- Knowledge of OAuth2 / Laravel Passport
- Familiarity with Laravel DevOps tools (Telescope, Envoy)
- Prior experience in remote teams or startup environments
Benefits & conditions
- Flexible working hours and remote-friendly setup (hybrid optional in the UK)
- Apple equipment provided (for UK-based developers)
- UK visa sponsorship after 6-12 months (subject to performance)
- 28 days paid holiday (including bank holidays) + birthday off
- Extra day of holiday rewarded for each year of service
- Expenses-paid tech conference trips (e.g., Larameets)
- Pension scheme
- Team events, socials, and days out
- Staff discounts on tech and more
- Free onsite parking (UK HQ)
- Inclusive, values-driven culture celebrating diversity
- Opportunity to build products that have a real impact on sustainability
