Job description

The Linux environment (Scientific Computing Infrastructure) is Embedded in the central IT infrastructure of the LIT, which is operated by an in-house IT administrator together with an external service provider. The tasks of the Linux IT system administrator include

  • Administration and conceptual development of the scientific computing infrastructure at LIT
  • Planning and rolling out patches, upgrades and configuration adjustments
  • Monitoring, early detection and elimination of faults as well as error and performance analyses
  • Setup and operation of various server applications, virtual machines and container-based applications
  • Installation, maintenance and administration of Linux workstations
  • Support of bioinformatics software packages for the evaluation of analysis data and the associated laboratory information systems with web application
  • Technical documentation and management of existing software and hardware, Linux IT infrastructure and IT processes (Linux clusters and PCs)
  • IT-side support for research and development projects
  • Ensuring IT and data security in collaboration with the service provider
  • Close cooperation with IT, eg vacation replacement in 1st/2nd level user support

Requirements

  • Successfully completed (technical) university degree in computer science, physics or mathematics or completed training as an IT specialist or a comparable qualification
  • Very good knowledge of Debian/Ubuntu or other Linux derivatives in corporate use, common container technologies and backup systems
  • Experience in system hardening, use of mandatory access control frameworks (eg AppArmor, SELinux) and rights management using access control lists (ACLs)
  • Basic knowledge of orchestration tools such as Ansible or Puppet
  • Technical aptitude, reliability, proactive approach and sense of responsibility
  • Willingness to familiarize yourself with new technologies
  • Good written and spoken German or English skills

Desirable:

  • Basic knowledge in the administration of Kubernetes and Slurm clusters
  • Several years of professional experience in Linux system administration
  • Knowledge of data security, databases and storage technologies
