Job description
We're looking for a Data Network Engineer to take a hands-on role in the full lifecycle of our network solutions. From initial design through to configuration, support, and ongoing improvement, you'll be working across a diverse and evolving environment, enabling the secure and reliable operation of SSE Transmission's growing energy network.
This isn't about pulling cables or installing hardware, it's about designing and configuring robust, fit for purpose networks that connect remote sites, substations, and control systems across Scotland. You'll work with a range of technologies and have the opportunity to shape how we deliver connectivity in a critical infrastructure setting.
If you enjoy seeing a solution through from concept to steady state, and want to work in a team that values practical engineering, ownership, and doing things the right way, we'd love to hear from you.
You will
- Contribute to the design and delivery of network solutions within the Cyber Resilience for Operational Technology (CROT) Programme, working closely with colleagues and applying agreed standards.
- Provide specialist input on the Operational Technology (OT) network, supporting its development, configuration, and ongoing improvement.
- Maintain a detailed understanding of network topology (logical and physical) across LAN and WAN environments, including hands-on discovery where needed.
- Support the development of network strategy as part of the wider OT roadmap, collaborating with suppliers to help bring strategic plans into action.
Assess network risks and shape practical mitigations, while exploring new technologies and approaches that strengthen resilience and performance.
Requirements
Do you have experience in WAN?, * Solid experience in designing and configuring network solutions, with a good working knowledge of LAN, WAN, QoS, and firewall technologies.
- A strong understanding of network security principles and the ability to apply practical mitigations in real-world environments.
- Clear and confident communication skills - able to explain technical concepts to different audiences and contribute to documentation, designs, and discussions.
- A methodical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to turn ideas and requirements into workable plans, designs, or reports.
- Hands-on experience with Cisco networking (including multi-site Cisco fabric networks) and Palo Alto firewalls, ideally covering both design and operational aspects.
