Job description

My client is supporting its public body on large-scale, mission-critical digital services. We're looking for a hands-on DevOps Engineer to strengthen delivery, reliability and security across cloud-native platforms and CI/CD pipelines. Key Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines (build, test, deploy, release automation).
  • Implement IaC for repeatable, secure environments (prod/non-prod).
  • Operate and optimise Kubernetes/Docker-based services (scalability, reliability, cost).
  • Improve observability (logging, metrics, tracing), SRE practices and incident response.
  • Embed DevSecOps: secrets management, policy-as-code, vulnerability remediation.
  • Collaborate with developers, architects and security on delivery best practices.
  • Produce documentation/runbooks; contribute to standards and governance.

Must-Have Skills

  • Cloud: AWS (core services, networking, IAM, cost-aware design).
  • Containers & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (EKS preferred).
  • IaC: Terraform (modules, workspaces, state management), Ansible.
  • CI/CD: GitLab CI or similar (GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps), artifact/versioning.
  • Scripting: Bash and/or Python for automation.
  • OS & Networking: Linux, DNS, VPC/Subnets, Security Groups, load balancers.
  • Observability: Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/Opensearch, CloudWatch.
  • Security: Secrets management (e.g., AWS Secrets Manager/HashiCorp Vault), vulnerability scanning (Snyk/Trivy), policy-as-code (OPA/Conftest).

Nice-to-Have

  • GitOps (Argo CD / Flux) and Helm charts.
  • Service mesh (Istio/Linkerd) or advanced networking policies.
  • Compliance in UK public sector (NCSC cloud principles), Well-Architected.
  • Experience on large government programmes.

Deliverables

  • Stable, secure CI/CD pipelines and IaC baselines.
  • Kubernetes platform improvements (scaling, reliability, cost).
  • Observability dashboards and actionable alerts.
  • Runbooks and documentation for operations and incident management.

Requirements

  • Pragmatic, delivery-focused engineer with strong collaboration skills.
  • Comfortable balancing speed, security and governance in public sector contexts.
  • Clear communicator; able to document and propose improvements.
