Job description
In this position you shall become responsible for the technical management of the fully integrated development and realization of optical systems for space applications to meet the stakeholders' expectations within performance, cost, schedule and risk constraints.
Your Tasks
- Act as technical focal point between engineering and other organizational functions (Customer, Project Management, AIT Management, Product Assurance)
- Coordinate the integrated technical effort and the engineering interfaces via the Work Breakdown Structure, System Engineering Management Plan and Engineering Work Plan
- Ensure that all necessary technical engineering tasks are defined, planned and resourced
- Establish and maintain the instrument-level technical baseline including requirements, constraints, designs, assumptions, interfaces, resource allocations and team responsibilities
- Lead analysis of customer requirements and definition, evaluation, and verification of instrument-level requirements; decompose to subsystem level with traceability and exhaustiveness
- Coordinate the assessment of the instrument-level compliance considering lower level compliance status
- Generate cost, schedule, and performance projections based on the top-level system design
- Act as the final decision authority on instrument-level design and performance
- Provide technical support to ensure the design integrity and convergence
- Provide technical contributions to Project Management for balancing technological needs versus non-technical, interests, e.g. for time- and cost-planning or for coordination and support of subcontractors
- Provide technical contributions to project risk management
- Manage and lead project- or instrument-level technical reviews
- Implement and ensure control of the System Engineering processes within the project
Requirements
- University (TU), polytechnic degree or PhD in Physics or Engineering, preferably with major focus on Optical Systems
- Proven Systems Engineer or Technical Manager experience on scientific optical instruments (interferometers, spectrometers, telescopes)
- Ideally, experience in the development logic of Space Instruments for Earth Observation or Astronomy in Phases 0 to B2, as well as significant H/W experience in the Phases C and D
- Experience in engineering economic, scost/schedule projections, resource planning, risk analysis
- Organised and structured task approach, experience in technical coordination of a multidisciplinary engineering team
Skills & Competencies:
- Team work, good conceptual, analytical and organizational skills
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
- Highly proficient in English (spoken and written); German language skills beneficial
