Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior System and Network Engineer to join the team at our SAGE St Fergus site, The preference would be to be site based full time, however hybrid working arrangements can be agreed.
The Senior Systems and Network Engineer is responsible for the administration, configuration management, lifecycle support, and cyber security assurance of critical Operational Technology (OT) and Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS) within the SAGE environment - Primarily on SAGE's IACS Purdue Level 3.
The Role:
The role provides specialist technical leadership across industrial networks, historian platforms, interfaces, embedded applications, and cyber security controls, ensuring systems remain secure, reliable, compliant, and fit for purpose throughout their lifecycle. The position acts as a key technical interface between operations, projects, IT, vendors, and security stakeholders. This role is Site based at SAGE Gas Terminal, St Fergus, and may on occasion require some out of hours technical support., System Administration & Configuration Management
- Provide database administration, configuration management, and technical support for SAGE operational systems including PCMS, PI Systems (PI2, PI3), SPEEDO, GSMR/DEWPOINT/EFF Visual Basic applications, and Nutanix virtualisation clusters
- Maintain configuration control, documentation, and asset registers for OT and networked systems
- Perform fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, and resolution for live operational systems
Interfaces & Data Integration
- Support, configure, and maintain system interfaces using technologies including OPC, PI-to-PI, Serial Modbus, PI API, PI Client tools, and Vendor Management Systems (VMS)
- Manage system data interfaces with third-party systems and partners, ensuring data integrity, availability, and security
- Support embedded applications and advanced data usage within PI systems, including KPIs, diagnostics, CVSL, run hours, PACED metrics, flare flows, and performance monitoring
Cyber Security & Network Engineering
- Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of SAGE industrial cyber security controls in line with IEC 62443, IEC 27001/27002, and SAGE cyber security policies
- Interface with Wood IT, Wissen, and the Wood Security Group for network services, firewall rule reviews, approvals, and cyber security assurance activities
- Support OT intrusion detection systems and participate in cyber risk assessments and security reviews
- Contribute to the design, review, and maintenance of secure OT network architectures, including segmentation and defence-in-depth principles
Vendor & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with and manage specialist software, automation, telecoms, and datacomms vendors, including those supporting leak detection, composition tracking, BPIMS, SPIMS, NINJA, and 4MS services
- Review vendor system health reports and coordinate corrective actions as required
- Act as a key technical interface with SAGE Operations, Process Engineering, Ancala Allocations, Supply Chain, IT, Metering, and Project teams
Engineering & Project Support
- Prepare and review engineering studies, specifications, technical notes, scopes of work, system and network drawings, and design documentation
- Support Management of Change (MOC) activities and acceptance testing for system modifications
- Provide technical support to Wood projects throughout the project lifecycle, including brownfield upgrades, system replacements, and obsolescence management
Operational Support & Governance
- Support SAGE operations and business users in the effective use of monitoring and historian applications
- Support systems lifecycle management including patching, upgrades, replacement strategies, and obsolescence planning
- Prepare and manage Permits to Work for self and vendors working on SAGE systems and infrastructure
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, procedures, and best practices
Requirements
Expected:
- Completed recognised apprenticeship or equivalent certified training program
- Degree qualified (BSc or equivalent) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience
Desirable:
- Chartership or relevant professional engineer status accredited by a national or industry engineering institution preferred
Knowledge, skills and experience:
The incumbent through working experience must be able to demonstrate a knowledge/understanding of the following:-
Essential:
- Significant experience in industrial control system network design and OT environments
- Strong understanding of IEC 62443 Industrial Cyber Security principles
- Good understanding of IEC 27001/27002 Information Security Management
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and OPC, including associated security considerations
- Experience delivering and supporting brownfield automation and control system upgrades or replacement projects
- Proven ability to write technical specifications and engineering documentation
- Strong knowledge of engineering practices, methodologies, applicable codes, standards, and lifecycle management
- Inquisitive, well organised, and detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrable working experience as a Network or System Engineer or equivalent
Desirable:
- Professional certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CWNP, ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity certifications, or GICSP
- Experience with OT intrusion detection systems
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulatory requirements applicable to OT environments
- Understanding of the interaction between physical security and cyber security in industrial systems
- Experience with modern automation tools, platforms, and engineering software
