Job description

Private/Public Cloud Infrastructure Management

  • Manage our private cloud infrastructure which consists of VMWare, Cisco UCS, Dell PowerStore storage appliances and Juniper networking across two datacenters.
  • Manage Veeam backup infrastructure and carry out regular restore testing.
  • Manage public cloud infrastructure (AWS/OCI) including performance optimisation, cost management, and security operations. Plan and deliver cloud migration projects and cross-functional initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.

Network Management and Implementation

  • Manage enterprise networking which includes VRF's, VLANs, VRRP and BGP for routing between carrier networks to provide customer access to private cloud.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise on network solutions and assist with delivery of new connectivity for providing customers with access to the private/public cloud environments
  • Monitor and optimise network performance, addressing issues proactively before they impact service.

Systems Administration and Monitoring

  • Manage both Windows Server and Oracle Linux environments, ensuring system stability and high availability across production systems.
  • Perform proactive monitoring across all infrastructure and services, working with the infrastructure team to remediate any issues.

Collaboration and Project Delivery

  • Proven ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects, including cloud migrations, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and engaging effectively with clients and stakeholders.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Strong understanding of security best practices, patch management, and vulnerability remediation with the ability to apply security controls and maintain compliance in both the private and public cloud.
  • Create, maintain, and update comprehensive documentation for all configurations, processes, and solutions.

Mentoring and Team Development

  • Experience mentoring engineers within a team, sharing your expertise and helping develop their technical skills and promote continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Enterprise Infrastructure Expertise: Proven experience working with enterprise infrastructure in a senior or lead capacity, with strong capabilities across virtualisation, networking and storage
  • Public Cloud Experience: Proven experience managing public cloud infrastructure (AWS/OCI preferred), including performance optimisation, cost management, and security operations. This includes migrating workloads from on-premises to public cloud environments, with demonstrated understanding of cloud-native services, hybrid connectivity solutions (Direct Connect), and cloud architecture best practices. Experience monitoring and optimising cloud resource utilisation, implementing cost controls and budget management, and maintaining security and compliance across environments.
  • Advanced Networking: Strong understanding of enterprise networking including BGP, VRRP and VRF's, with proven experience managing complex routing configurations
  • Project Management and Delivery: Demonstrated responsibility for delivering cloud migration projects and internal cross-functional initiatives, ensuring timely completion, stakeholder engagement and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Leadership and Communication: Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience mentoring engineers, sharing technical expertise, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence within infrastructure teams.
  • Automation and Infrastructure as Code: Proficiency in network automation using Ansible for configuration management and provisioning, along with experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as CloudFormation or Terraform for cloud resource deployment.

Your mission As a Senior Cloud & Infrastructure Engineer at Wellington IT, your mission is to play a major role in the evolution of our enterprise infrastructure as we transition from traditional private cloud to a modern hybrid environment. Working closely with the Head of Infrastructure, you'll be instrumental in executing our strategic migration to public cloud platforms while maintaining the existing private cloud environment. Your expertise across virtualisation, networking, storage, and cloud services will be critical to ensuring our transformation is successful, scalable, and secure. Our infrastructure currently centers around a VMware metro cluster spanning two data centres, built on Cisco UCS, Dell PowerStore storage, and Juniper networking. As we migrate workloads to the public cloud, you'll be a critical part of this transformation, bringing your public cloud experience to help execute the technical migration and management work. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who combines deep infrastructure knowledge with practical public cloud experience, passionate about modernising infrastructure and delivering robust, scalable solutions that bridge traditional and cloud-native environments.
