Job description
This is a full-time, permanent position for a Mainframe Application Developer & Support Engineer (COBOL) in a hybrid working model, requiring on-site attendance at least three days per week in Milton Keynes., We partner with major organisations across Financial Services, Communications, Media, Commercial, Transportation, and the Public Sector, delivering a broad portfolio of business solutions-including consulting, systems integration, outsourcing, network services, security, and enterprise-class technologies. Within our Managed Application Services function, we provide 24/7 support for mission-critical applications. We are now seeking a skilled professional to join the team responsible for supporting and enhancing Command-and-Control services for our client.
This role focuses primarily on the mainframe component of the solution, providing day-to-day operational support alongside software enhancements defined by the client.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify issues and propose effective resolutions to support end users
- Analyse and resolve problems relating to interfaces across multiple system components
- Apply creativity and technical insight to deliver enhancements and new areas of functionality, * You will be required to attend our site at least three days per week and therefore must live within commutable distance from Milton Keynes.
Requirements
- Strong experience in COBOL and mainframe application development
- Experience of OS2200 Unisys mainframe technology
- Proven background in supporting and maintaining mainframe operational systems
- Solid understanding of batch processing, JCL, and mainframe utilities
- Strong SQL or database scripting knowledge (mainframe or equivalent)
- Experience debugging, troubleshooting, and analysing complex system interactions
- Familiarity with structured development practices and Agile methodologies
- Eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (must meet residency requirements)
Preferred:
- Experience working within large-scale, mission-critical environments
- Exposure to integration between mainframe and distributed systems
- Understanding of modern development and support frameworks
- Ability to mentor junior team members and support continuous improvement
- Experience in Public Safety/Emergency Services would be highly advantageous, * Candidates must have resided in the UK for a minimum of three years to qualify for security clearance. This requirement is non-negotiable. You must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for this role
