The Search & AI Platform supports products such as Scopus and ScienceDirect, delivering trusted research data and insights to the global scientific community. As a Data Engineer II, you will contribute to building and maintaining reliable, scalable data pipelines and services, working closely with experienced engineers in a supportive team environment.
This role is well suited to engineers who are early to mid-career and motivated to grow their technical skills while making a meaningful impact.
About the team:
The Search and AI Platform is Elsevier's agentic data platform, which powers products such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, and our next-generation LLM-powered research systems. The platform utilises agentic services to interrogate our rich knowledge graphs, search and recommendation systems, and our unparalleled collection of research data, delivering insights to the scientific community that enable them to collaborate more effectively, work smarter, and produce high-quality research more efficiently
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of data pipelines with guidance from senior team members.
- Write clear, maintainable code that follows established engineering standards.
- Work with technologies such as Python, Spark, Airflow, and relational and non-relational databases.
- Support ELT/ETL processes for large-scale data ingestion.
- Help monitor, maintain, and improve existing data platforms and services.
- Learn and apply cloud fundamentals (AWS) for deploying and operating data solutions.
Requirements
- Experience in software or data engineering through work experience, internships, placements, or equivalent practical projects.
- Working knowledge of Python; experience with Java is helpful but not required.
- Understanding of core data engineering concepts such as ETL/ELT, batch processing, and SQL.
- Willingness to learn new tools, technologies, and ways of working.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with others
