Job description
The Principal Database Engineer is a distinguished technical leader responsible for the architecture, evolution, and operational excellence of Intact's Finance and Performance Data platforms.
They set the technical direction for enterprise data stores, drive innovation in data architecture, SQL Server engineering, ETL, Indomulti-platform integration, and ensure the delivery of scalable, secure, and cost-effective data solutions that support financial, actuarial, and regulatory reporting.
As a Principal Database Engineer, the role influences engineering standards, mentors senior engineers, and collaborates with Finance Systems, Service & Change management, Infrastructure, Business Analysis, Testing, and strategic suppliers to shape platform strategy and adoption of best practices across the organisation
You'll make an impact by:
- Serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert for the assigned database platform(s) and supporting applications, providing authoritative technical guidance across the delivery lifecycle.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts, Finance Consultants, Service, and Change teams to define, analyse, and agree system change requirements, including assessing technical feasibility and translating business needs into effective database solutions.
- Produce, review, and consult on Key Design Decisions (KDDs), ensuring that database and data architecture designs are well-documented, technically sound, and consistent with organisational standards.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to development teams on database design and implementation, including application data architecture, development practices, and testing activities such as test data generation and management.
- Coordinate with offshore development teams, acting as a key liaison between offshore technical resources and internal stakeholders to ensure clarity of requirements and alignment to agreed designs.
- Work closely with wider Intact teams on multi-platform initiatives to ensure database and data requirements related to the platform are fully understood and appropriately addressed.
- Support production operations by assisting in the analysis and resolution of incidents, including detailed examination of production data to identify root causes of issues raised by business users.
Requirements
- Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including database development, administration, and production support in enterprise-scale environments.
- Experience working across database platforms, Unix/Linux systems, and associated reporting and ETL tools, supporting end-to-end data processing and integration requirements.
- Good understanding of database performance and optimisation techniques, including query tuning, indexing strategies, andthe development of test harnesses to support validation and regression testing.
- Demonstrable experience in the design, implementation, and delivery of large-scale data migration, data transformation, and data cleansing solutions.
- Experience acting as a technical Subject Matter Expert for large, complex systems built using multiple technologies and integrated platforms.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms, with preference for Microsoft Azure, including familiarity with cloud-based database technologies and DevOps tooling to support automated build, deployment, and operational processes.
- Proficiency in data analysis and manipulation tools, with Excel and VBA coding skills preferred to support data validation, analysis, and bulk data upload activities.
- Considerable problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to analyse complex technical issues, coordinate with cross-functional teams and subject matter experts, and deliver effective, timely solutions.
