Job description

Work set up: HybridOur client in the Information Technology and Services industry is looking for an Infrastructure Engineer (Virtualisation) to join the Virtualization Engineering Team within Distributed Compute in CTO Enterprise Services. This role focuses on guiding the development and delivery of VMware products, ensuring they meet business needs and customer expectations. The position drives VMware product vision and strategy with emphasis on automation, availability, reliability, performance, and scale, while supporting business-critical services hosted on a shared VMware platform.What you will do:

  • Lead and mentor VMware engineers within the POD structure.
  • Manage team performance and support professional development.
  • Define and drive VMware product vision and strategy focusing on automation, reliability, performance, and scalability.
  • Design, deploy, and manage VMware technologies including vSphere, vCenter, vROPS, vRO, vRLI, and vRLCM.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, troubleshooting, and performance tuning of the virtual environment.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards and SRE best practices through platform constraints and system modelling.
  • Drive automation initiatives using PowerCLI, Python, Ansible, and vRealize Suite tools.
  • Collaborate with operations, applications, engineering, connectivity teams, and vendors to deliver infrastructure solutions aligned to business needs.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, standards, and best practices.
  • Participate in capacity planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity activities.
  • Implement robust monitoring and alerting systems to proactively manage platform health.
  • Ensure system availability and performance in line with defined SLAs and SLOs.
  • Monitor compliance, mitigate risks using tools such as vRealize Operations, and ensure adherence to regulatory standards and internal policies.
  • Manage and improve platform offerings throughout their lifecycle using Agile methodologies.
  • Assess resource requirements for critical services and support sustainability and transformation initiatives.
  • Communicate product updates, supported version compliance, and CVEs to stakeholders.
  • Provide technical direction across VMware products, distributed systems, servers, and storage technologies.
  • Represent the team during major incidents and provide technical expertise in crisis situations.
  • Plan future capacity needs and optimise system performance through tuning and scaling activities.
  • Manage hardware and software lifecycle activities from planning and deployment to maintenance and decommissioning.

Requirements

  • Minimum fifteen years of total IT experience in large-scale infrastructure environments and at least twelve years of experience in distributed systems including Linux, Windows, high availability solutions, server hardware, and VMware products.
  • Proven experience managing VMware platforms including vSphere, vCenter, vROPS, vRO, vRLI, and vRLCM within banking or financial services environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and drive engineering delivery through automation in large-scale virtualisation infrastructures.
  • Strong understanding of networking and storage technologies in relation to distributed systems, particularly within VMware environments.
  • Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Experience working within Agile methodologies and service transformation initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering practices and platform governance.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent experience preferred.
