Job description
Hull City Council is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Technical ICT Security Officer to join our Enterprise Cybersecurity Team. If you're motivated by protecting services that impact thousands of people across the city, this is a role where your expertise will truly make a difference.
This is a key position responsible for safeguarding critical ICT systems, owning and coordinating cyber incident response, and strengthening the Council's overall security posture.
You will act as a specialist point of escalation for information security matters, providing expert advice across a wide range of security domains. Working closely with technical teams, project leadership, system owners, and external partners, you will help ensure our systems remain secure, compliant, and resilient in an evolving threat landscape., As our Technical ICT Security Officer, you will:
- Own and coordinate the Cyber Incident Response process, ensuring rapid and effective investigation, containment, and recovery from ICT security incidents.
- Conduct detailed technical assessments of systems, networks, infrastructure, and processes to identify vulnerabilities and oversee remediation within agreed timescales.
- Provide specialist information security advice to ICT colleagues, project managers, service areas, and system owners to ensure solutions meet required security standards and controls.
- Carry out vulnerability scanning of internal and external networks, applications, and websites, maintaining ownership of remediation action plans.
- Audit hardware and software configurations, documenting exceptions and ensuring alignment with recommended good practice.
- Keep up to date with emerging threats, attack trends, security technologies, and compliance requirements to enhance the Council's security architecture.
- Support security awareness activities that help build good security behaviours across the organisation, including planning and delivering wider awareness initiatives.
- Contribute to governance, risk and compliance (GRC) activities, including support for external security and assurance requirements.
- Support the secure use of cloud services by advising on cloud security controls, monitoring approaches and best practice configurations.
- Support major ICT incidents, cyber emergencies, or disaster recovery situations as required.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Operating systems?, Technical expertise
- Strong understanding of information security principles, threats, and best-practice controls.
- Good high-level knowledge of ICT infrastructure components such as operating systems, networks (LAN/WAN/VLAN), firewalls, web technologies, and monitoring tools.
- Experience using vulnerability scanning tools and applying security-hardening techniques in a complex environment.
- Understanding of cloud security principles and secure configurations and monitoring in cloud environments.
- Awareness of governance, risk and compliance (GRC) practices and how external assurance requirements are supported in an ICT context.

You will bring relevant experience in ICT and cybersecurity, supported by appropriate technical knowledge. Formal qualifications or professional development in information security, ICT, or related disciplines are welcome, and security-focused certifications would be an advantage.
