Job description

As a Data Mentor, you will be a key figure in supporting our apprentices enrolled on the Level 3 Data Technician Apprenticeship Standard throughout their learning journey. You will coach, guide, and inspire learners through regular one-to-one mentoring sessions, helping them build confidence, develop industry-relevant data skills, and apply their knowledge in real-world work environments.

Unlike traditional teaching or classroom delivery roles, this position is centred on mentoring - providing ongoing professional support, challenge, and encouragement as learners progress through their apprenticeship and develop within their data roles.

Responsibilities…

  • Conduct regular one-to-one mentoring sessions (virtually and occasionally in person) with apprentices enrolled on the Level 3 Data Technician Apprenticeship.
  • Coach and support apprentices to overcome technical and professional challenges, stay motivated, and achieve their learning and workplace objectives.
  • Support learners in developing core data competencies including:
  • Data collection and validation
  • Data cleansing and transformation
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Creating dashboards and visualisations
  • Using tools such as Excel, SQL, Power BI (or equivalent data platforms)
  • Understanding data governance, security, and ethics
  • Monitor progress against key milestones, including portfolio development, workplace project evidence, and preparation for End Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Provide constructive, developmental feedback on learners' work, helping them connect technical knowledge with practical business impact.
  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions, tracking learner progress and identifying any support needs, risks, or safeguarding concerns.
  • Liaise with employers, trainers, and internal delivery teams to ensure a joined-up and supportive approach to learner development.
  • Stay up to date with current data industry trends, tools, and best practice to ensure mentoring reflects real-world data environments.

You will take the time to understand each learner individually, supporting not only their apprenticeship success but their long-term career progression in the data industry.

You will set high professional standards and act as an inspirational role model for aspiring data professionals.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience working in a data-focused role (e.g., Data Analyst, Data Technician, BI Analyst) with mentoring, coaching, or line management experience.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting learners on the Level 3 Data Technician Standard (or similar data-related qualifications) is highly desirable.
  • Strong working knowledge of core data tools and concepts, such as:
  • Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, analysis tools)
  • SQL
  • Data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau or similar)
  • Basic database concepts
  • Data quality, governance, and compliance principles
  • Passion for developing others through coaching and mentoring (formal teaching qualifications not required).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and motivate learners.
  • Empathetic, patient, and learner-focused approach.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly in tracking progress and documentation.

Desirable Qualifications and Knowledge…

  • Teaching Qualification / PTLLS (or equivalent).
  • Assessor qualification (e.g., CAVA) or experience supporting apprenticeship standards.
  • Experience preparing learners for End Point Assessment within an apprenticeship framework.

What to expect during the interview process:

We want to ensure you're the right fit for us, and that we're the right fit for you. Our process is designed to be relaxed yet insightful:

Stage 1: A 30-minute Teams call with our Data Programme Lead - this is all about fit and feel.

Stage 2: An in-person interview at our office with our Head of Delivery and Delivery panel. This stage may also include a fun and interactive activity to showcase your mentoring approach and data knowledge in action.

Important Stuff!

This is a hybrid role with the requirement to attend the Derby HQ twice per month.
