Job description

  • Use AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to rapidly build and iterate on front-end implementations, turning designs into working code faster than traditional workflows allow.
  • Generate wireframes, prototypes, and UI concepts at speed using AI-powered tools (v0, Figma AI, Galileo, or equivalent), then refine them with your design judgement and user understanding.
  • Synthesise user research, usability test results, and analytics data using LLMs to extract insights quickly - then act on them.
  • Draft and iterate on microcopy, documentation, and design system guidelines with AI assistance, freeing up your time for higher-value design thinking.
  • Stay current with the rapidly evolving landscape of AI design tools, evaluating and adopting new tools as they emerge, and sharing what you learn with the wider team.

Core UX/UI Responsibilities

  • Conceptualise and design user interface solutions for our web and mobile experiences, with a relentless focus on usability and conversion.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to understand customer needs and validate design decisions with real evidence.
  • Analyse user behaviour data and feedback to make informed, data-driven decisions about interface improvements.
  • Create user flows, journey maps, and prototypes that clearly communicate design intent to developers and stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain design guidelines, component libraries, and best practices that the development team can follow consistently.
  • Deploy CRO/A-B tests for proposed features and site improvements, and report measurable results (including incremental revenue impact through CRO and AOV improvements, reduced bounce rate, Increase in cookie acceptance and increased email and account sign up.) to stakeholders.
  • Work closely with Product Managers, Developers, and the Solution Architect to ensure designs are technically feasible, commercially sound, and aligned with business objectives.

Requirements

Do you have experience in User research?, * Demonstrable UI/UX design skills with a strong portfolio of web and/or mobile work.

  • Working experience with front-end technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Proficiency in modern design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
  • Proven, practical experience using AI/LLM tools in your design or development workflow - not just curiosity, but actual integration into how you work day-to-day.
  • The ability to show (in your portfolio or at interview) concrete examples of how AI tools have made you faster, better, or both.
  • A strong desire to keep learning as the tooling landscape evolves, with the initiative to experiment and adopt new approaches independently.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to articulate design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI code generation tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, v0).
  • Familiarity with CRO methodologies and A/B testing platforms, preferably ABTasty.
  • Experience working in retail or e-commerce.
  • Understanding of design systems and component-based design.
  • Experience with analytics tools (GA4, Hotjar, or similar) to inform design decisions.

Benefits & conditions

  • Competitive salary dependent on experience. (we'll be honest - we're a retailer, not a tech giant, but we pay fairly and the role offers genuine ownership and growth)
  • The opportunity to define how AI-augmented design works across a 180+ store retail business.
  • Enrolment into company's pension scheme.
  • Discretionary Annual Bonus scheme.

  • Access to RetailTRUST (Wellbeing & Financial Support).
  • Access to the Pavers Foundation: employee-led grant application and charitable giving scheme.
  • Access to wider training and development opportunities through Pavers Academy.

About the company

We're looking for a UX/UI Developer to join our forward-thinking, fast-evolving Tech Team at Pavers. Based at our York Head Office, this is an exciting opportunity for a designer who has fully embraced AI-powered workflows and can't imagine working any other way. You don't just experiment with tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, v0 or Figma's AI features, you use them as core parts of how you design, prototype and ship high-quality digital experiences. Pavers is a profitable, family-run footwear retailer with over 200 stores and a growing e-commerce operation. As we continue a genuine technology transformation, modernising legacy systems, reducing technical debt and building the platforms that will power our next phase of growth, design plays a critical role in shaping how our customers and colleagues experience our technology. This is a role with real ownership and impact. You'll be the design voice within a cross-functional team of Developers, a Solution Architect, Product Managers and QA Analysts, owning the full journey from user research through to front-end implementation. You'll move quickly and confidently, leveraging AI tools at every stage to streamline workflows, accelerate prototyping and enhance quality. We believe the UX/UI discipline is being fundamentally reshaped by AI and LLM technologies. A single designer working effectively with these tools can now achieve what once required a much larger team. This role is for someone who sees AI not as a threat to their craft, but as a multiplier of it, and who is excited by the opportunity to shape how AI-augmented design operates across an entire retail business. You'll join a small, capable tech team where pace, collaboration and practical delivery go hand in hand, and where your ideas, approach and expertise will directly influence how we design and build for the future., The Pavers story began in York in 1971 when Catherine Paver took out a £200 bank loan (for a sofa she told them) to fund her new business. She had big dreams of changing the world of footwear and a passion to provide comfortable and stylish shoes for all. Starting small, she sold shoes at village halls and homeware parties before opening the first Pavers shop in Scarborough in 1981, when Catherine's three sons joined the business. One of her sons, Stuart, ran the business as Managing Director for over 40 years, joined by his son Jason in 2016. As of September 2023, Jason Paver is now the Managing Director of Pavers Ltd, with Stuart Paver moving to Chairman, taking the company into the 3rd generation of family run leadership. From these modest beginnings, Pavers Shoes has grown to be a UK leader in today's footwear industry, with over 180 stores nationwide encompassing our more recently acquired brands including Jones Bootmaker, Herring Shoes, Padders & Van Dal. We remain acquisitive, highly profitable, and are an ever-growing, independent family-run business, employing over 1,900 people. We were delighted to receive recognition as a 3* Employer with 'World Class' levels of workplace engagement and the '2nd Best Retailer to Work For' by Best Companies in November 2024. At Pavers, we attribute the talents, passion, and dedication of our colleagues as the reasons for our success.
