Job description

We're looking for a highly technical consultant to lead the migration of complex, business-critical spreadsheets from Excel to Google Sheets.

This is not a lift-and-shift exercise.

Many of our spreadsheets contain advanced formulas, macros, and large-scale data models. Some should be migrated, some rebuilt, and some left untouched. Your role is to figure out which is which-and execute accordingly.

If your experience is limited to Google Workspace admin, file transfers, or basic Sheets usage, this role is not a fit., * Audit a wide range of Excel files (including macro-heavy and large-scale models)

  • Classify spreadsheet complexity (Low / Medium / High)
  • Identify structural, performance, and scalability issues
  • Determine migration feasibility:
  • Convert
  • Rebuild
  • Keep in Excel
  1. Lead Migration Strategy
  • Define a clear migration approach across the organization
  • Estimate effort and risk per spreadsheet
  • Recommend alternative solutions where Sheets is not the right tool
  • Design scalable spreadsheet architectures in Google Sheets
  1. Execute Pilot Conversions
  • Convert 3-10 representative spreadsheets
  • Replace VBA/macros with Apps Script where viable
  • Rebuild models when direct conversion is not feasible
  • Validate performance and usability post-migration
  1. Build for Scale
  • Optimize spreadsheets for performance (large datasets, calculation efficiency)
  • Integrate external data sources (APIs, databases, etc.)
  • Establish best practices for future spreadsheet development, * Advanced Excel engineering:
  • Complex formulas, pivot tables, Solver
  • VBA/macros (you've written and debugged them, not just used them)
  • Large-scale spreadsheet modeling
  • Performance optimization
  • Advanced Google Sheets:
  • Array formulas, QUERY, advanced logic
  • Google Apps Script (macro replacement)
  • Deep understanding of Sheets limitations and workarounds
  • Spreadsheet architecture & data workflows:
  • Structuring models for scalability and maintainability
  • Understanding when spreadsheets break-and why, Excel
  • VBA / macros
  • Pivot tables
  • Power Query
  • Solver
  • Complex nested formulas
  • Large datasets (>50k rows)

Google Sheets

  • Apps Script
  • Array formulas
  • QUERY function
  • Performance optimization
  • External integrations

Automation / Data

  • REST APIs
  • Python (nice to have)
  • Data pipelines (nice to have)

What Good Looks Like

By the end of the engagement, you will have delivered:

  • Spreadsheet inventory Full overview of analyzed files

  • Complexity classification Clear segmentation (Low / Medium / High)

  • Migration feasibility mapping Convert vs Rebuild vs Keep

  • Effort estimates Time and complexity per file

  • Migration roadmap Clear, executable plan across all spreadsheets, * Your experience is limited to Google Workspace admin or IT migrations

  • You've never worked with VBA or complex spreadsheet models

  • You've only used spreadsheets, not engineered them

Why This Role Matters

Spreadsheets are critical to how we operate. Poor migration decisions will break workflows, slow teams down, and create long-term technical debt.

We're looking for someone who can think like an engineer, not just execute like a technician.

Requirements

Do you have experience in VBA?, * Proven experience migrating complex Excel spreadsheets to Google Sheets

  • Hands-on experience converting VBA Apps Script
  • Experience analyzing spreadsheet performance and redesigning structure

Strong plus:

  • Experience working with engineering or hardware teams
  • Background in data analysis or financial modeling
  • Experience with Python, SQL, BigQuery, or API-based data pipelines
