Job description

As a system administrator, you will play a critical role in supporting, maintaining and developing the computer systems upon which all the Department's IT operations depend. Your work will involve close collaboration with team members and other departments within the University. You will be instrumental in maintaining a high level of service and continuously seeking opportunities to enhance our services and processes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Server administration: across varied applications on both Windows and Linux platforms.
  • Troubleshooting and monitoring: diagnose problems and come up with solutions.
  • Design and Development: build brand new systems to replace old ones.
  • Communication and Documentation: engage with multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and Training: share knowledge and develop your skills., The Engineering Science IT Infrastructure team consists of subject matter experts led by the Infrastructure Manager, who together are responsible for the core IT systems within the department. The team has four core areas of expertise:
  • Networking
  • Servers, systems, and storage
  • High performance computing
  • Security

Requirements

To thrive in this varied and engaging role, we are looking for someone with:

  • Extensive experience working with enterprise computer systems.
  • A keen interest in the field of server administration, with a strong desire to learn new skills and adopt new technologies and practises.
  • A friendly and helpful demeanour, with a particular desire to improve services.
  • A strong sense of responsibility, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to see tasks through to resolution.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
