Job description
We are looking for a dedicated scientific researcher to improve data processing at the GFZ's geomagnetic observatories and the geomagnetic Hpo indices.
The data automatically recorded at geomagnetic observatories must be continuously calibrated through regular supplementary measurements and thoroughly checked for data errors and external disturbances. A wide range of data products must be generated from the raw data and supplied to international networks. In addition, we calculate traditional and new indices of geomagnetic activity (Kp, Hpo). This project aims to update the partly outdated computer programmes used for data control and processing at the GFZ's geomagnetic observatories, and, where possible, to further automate them through the use of modern analytical methods. Additionally, open questions regarding the new Hpo index should be investigated to improve the index.
Your responsibilities:
- Updating the data processing software of the geomagnetic observatory
- Improving the automatic detection of noise in geomagnetic observatory data
- Improvement of the geomagnetic Hpo indices
Requirements
- A Master's degree in geophysics or geosciences
- Knowledge in geomagnetism and geophysical (in particular geomagnetic) measurement methods and instruments
- Expertise with geomagnetic ground data, in particular to separate natural variations and technical noise
- Expertise with geomagnetic activity indices, in particular Kp and Hpo
- Programming skills in Matlab and Python
- Very good command of English (spoken and written)
Benefits & conditions
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Public service benefits
- Extensive training opportunities
- Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career Centre
- Flexible working hours and conditions
