Job description
The London Borough of Hackney is known for its innovation and commitment to its residents. As a Content Designer here, you won't just be writing copy, you'll be designing end-to-end user journeys that dismantle complexity and ensure accessibility for all., You will be responsible for creating, evaluating, and reviewing content at every stage of the user journey. Acting at a level equivalent to a Civil Service HEO/SEO, you will:
- Design with Data: Use evidence, user research, and performance data to make informed content decisions.
- Prototype to Persuade: Use everything from paper sketches to digital prototypes to visualize content in context and show the "why" behind your work.
- Build Bridges: Work across government departments to influence stakeholders, build consensus, and ensure the user's voice is never lost in translation.
- Standard Bearer: Contribute to and champion style guides and content patterns, ensuring Hackney remains a leader in the cross-government content community.
- Iterate Constantly: Work in a fast-paced, Agile environment where you'll learn from mistakes, take calculated risks, and pivot based on user needs.
Requirements
To hit the ground running, we are looking for a practitioner who brings a "user-first" mindset to the table. The Must-Haves (CV Essentials):
- Experience: At least 3 years of professional experience specifically as a Content Designer.
- Sector Knowledge: Proven experience working as a Content Designer within the UK Public Sector (Local or Central Government).
- Agile Expertise: Significant experience working in multi-disciplinary teams (alongside developers, designers, and researchers) within an Agile environment.
Technical Proficiencies:
- User-Centred Design: Expert at translating user stories into accessible, plain-language content that works with assistive technologies.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to focus on outcomes rather than just activities, contributing to broader content strategies and policies.
- Stakeholder Management: A knack for tailoring communication to different audiences and using evidence to explain difficult design decisions.
- Content Lifecycle: A deep understanding of why content maintenance and governance are just as important as the initial creation.
