As a Cyber Security Analyst (Industrial Placement) in HMRCs CIO Cyber Security Operations, youll join one of our front-line security teams working to detect, investigate and respond to cyber threats.
You will be part of a mission-critical environment that operates 24/7 to protect our vast digital estate. Your placement will give you exposure to:
- Cyber Incident Handling:
- Supporting investigations into security events and incidents
- Learning how HMRC identifies, triages and responds to cyber threats
- Threat Hunting & Analysis:
- Using internal security data to uncover suspicious activity
- Monitoring multiple data sources for threat indicators
- Cyber Intelligence:
- Contributing to intelligence gathering and analysis
- Understanding emerging threats and how attackers operate
- Digital Forensics & Monitoring:
- Assisting with forensic investigations under supervision
- Conducting real-time monitoring of HMRCs environment
Throughout your placement, youll work with modern cyber technologies, receive guidance from experienced analysts, and play an active role in the protection of HMRCs services.

Sift
A preliminary sift will be conducted on your eligibility question, with those who meet the eligibility moving onto the full sift.
At full sift your CV and Personal Statement will be assessed, with the successful candidates being invited to interview.
We may also raise the score required at any stage of the process if we receive a high number of applications.
Interview
During the panel interview, your experience will be assessed, to determine your suitability for the role.
Interviews will take place via video link. Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.

Reserve List
A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles if this applies to you, well let you know via your Civil Service Jobs account.
Merit List
After interview, a single merit list will be created, and you will only be considered for posts in locations you have expressed a preference for. Appointments will be made in strict merit order in line with the set number of roles in each location.

Hybrid working at HMRC
HMRC is an office-based organisation, and colleagues are expected to spend 60% of their working time in the office. Essential Criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following: You currently studying an undergraduate degree where the placement year forms an accredited and compulsory/optional part of your bachelors programme? (For example: BSc or MSci degrees with an integrated placement year)
- You are studying for a degree in one of the following areas: (Cyber Security, IT, Computer Science, Design/Web Design or Forensic-related degree)
Eligibility Postgraduate study
This Industrial Placement is open to undergraduate students only. Applicants enrolled on postgraduate Masters degree programmes (for example, MSc, MRes or MA) from September 2026 are not eligible to apply., Customer facing roles in HMRC require the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English and/or Welsh where required. Where this is an essential requirement, this will be tested as part of the selection process.
