Job description

MCS Group has an exclusive opportunity for a Software Engineer Tech Lead to join a high-growth tech scale-up based in Belfast. This role would suit technologists from a variety of backgrounds; Team Leads, hands-on engineering leaders or even Principal Engineers who have had a taste of mentoring and management. If you're a technologist who enjoys working in fast-paced environments, tackling complex technical challenges, and setting the standard for others in the team and leading by example, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. You'll be joining a scaling technology business building best-in-class products across web, mobile and desktop platforms. As the company continues to grow, they're looking for a Software Engineer Tech Lead who can combine strong technical delivery with the ability to guide and support a talented engineering team. The successful candidate will be a pragmatic and self-sufficient engineer who is comfortable taking ownership, driving delivery, and helping shape how the team operates as it expands. This position is ideal for someone ready to make an immediate impact - an experienced engineer with a track record of leading teams and delivering high-quality software. The Role

  • Around 70-80% of your time will be spent hands-on in the code, building and delivering high-quality features.
  • You'll lead from the front by promoting clean, scalable development and supporting the team in technical decision-making and best practices.
  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership, including setting engineering standards, reviewing code, and contributing to architectural decisions.
  • Mentor and develop engineers in your pod through 1:1s, feedback, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Work closely with product and design teams to help shape roadmaps and turn ideas into deliverable outcomes.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of engineering culture, workflows, and delivery processes as the team continues to scale.

Requirements

  • You'll have demonstrable experience mentoring and leading engineers while delivering complex features within high-performing development teams.
  • The technology stack includes PHP (Symfony 7), NodeJS, Python, Rust, TypeScript, Angular 19 and AWS. Direct experience with some of these technologies would be beneficial, although engineers comfortable working across different languages and learning new tools are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based systems and distributed architectures.
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor engineers, raising team standards through code reviews, pairing and knowledge sharing.
  • A pragmatic approach to engineering, balancing immediate delivery with long-term scalability.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced Agile environments where priorities can evolve quickly.
  • A genuine passion for clean, maintainable code and continuous improvement.

Benefits & conditions

Circa £90,000 with a benefits package which includes share options.

Who are we?

Muse Group began life as Ultimate Guitar, the largest online global community of musicians. Eugeny Naidenov founded Ultimate Guitar in 1998, with a dream to make it easy for guitarists to play songs by Guns ‘N’ Roses and his other favorite rockers. From there, the site grew from a plucky, tab-sharing trailblazer into a global leader of online music publishing.

In 2017, Ultimate Guitar acquired MuseScore, expanding its reach into sheet music. Muse Group has only continued to grow from there — and now includes Audacity, StaffPad and many more.

In 2023, Muse Group acquired Hal Leonard, the legendary global sheet music publishers, adding an unparalleled music catalog and educational expertise to the team.

Today, we are an international, visionary team of creatives, music lovers and audio obsessives, developing products we could not live without.
