Job Title: SC Cleared AWS DevOps Engineer Location: Newcastle (Hybrid - other UK tech hubs considered) Contract Length: 12 months Day Rate: £425 per day (Inside IR35)

Overview

We're seeking an experienced AWS DevOps Engineer to join a cross-functional cloud engineering team supporting large-scale, high-availability platforms within a public sector environment. The ideal candidate will have deep AWS knowledge, strong automation skills, and a proven track record delivering and supporting complex cloud-based systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain AWS infrastructure using best practices for scalability, security, and performance.
  • Implement and manage containerized workloads using ECS, Kubernetes, and Docker.
  • Support SSO integrations across AWS services using SAML 2.0 and OIDC.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) artifacts with Terraform and Ansible.
  • Enhance monitoring, observability, and alerting using CloudWatch, Prometheus, Splunk, Grafana, and Zabbix.
  • Build CI/CD pipelines with GitLab CI, Jenkins, and GitHub Actions to automate deployment and testing processes.
  • Support release management and live production troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineers, architects, and operations teams to drive best DevOps practices.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • AWS Expertise: Strong command of core AWS services (ECS, IAM, S3, RDS, VPC, Lambda, SNS, SQS).
  • Networking: Advanced understanding of AWS Transit Gateway, VPC Endpoints, TCP/IP, HTTP/S, DNS, and TLS/SSL termination.
  • Containerization: Experience with Docker, ECS, and Kubernetes (monitoring pods, handling deployments).
  • SSO: Deep knowledge of SAML 2.0 and OIDC for AWS access unification.
  • IaC & Configuration Management: Terraform, Ansible, Packer, Cloud-Init Scripting, Consul Template.
  • CI/CD: Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Nexus, and general release automation.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Hands-on with Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, and Dynatrace.
  • OS Expertise: Strong Linux/Unix background.
  • Languages & Scripting: Must have Python and Shell Scripting (Bash, Groovy, Go desirable).
  • Cloud Architecture: Broad AWS cloud design experience; VPC Lattice exposure desirable.

  • Role is inside IR35, with working flexibility and hybrid arrangements (ideally Newcastle-based, but open to other UK tech hubs).
  • Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
  • Previous experience in a public sector or enterprise-scale environment advantageous.
