Job description

Join WMATA as an Integrated Network Engineer (INE)! Are you a certified network professional with expertise in Avaya VoIP, SIP technologies, and enterprise communication systems? WMATA is seeking a senior-level Integrated Network Engineer to lead the daily operations and optimization of our voice and data networks as part of our Digital Modernization (DM) initiative. In this vital role, you'll be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Metronet and Avaya solutions, ensuring secure, scalable, and reliable communication services across our 24/7 transit operation. Work alongside a diverse, inclusive, and mission-driven team supporting critical functions at our IT Help Desk, Operations Center, and Integrated Command & Communications Center (MICC).

If you're passionate about cutting-edge network technologies and thrive in complex, high-impact environments, we want to hear from you!, The Integrated Network Engineer (INE) is a technical expert and certified professional responsible for administering daily operations and management of all voice and data networks supporting WMATA Digital Modernization (DM). A senior-level engineer and SME for Metronet, specializing in Avaya VOIP SIP media gateway devices for premise and cloud telephony solutions. The INE ensures implementation and continuous operation of robust, secure, scalable communication systems. They collaborate with DM Service Delivery & Operations leadership, IT Help Desk, IT Operations Center, and Metro Integrated Command and Communications Center (MICC) to maintain 24/7/365 network reliability and security. The position stays current on regulatory compliance and fosters an inclusive culture valuing diversity, equity, accessibility, and belonging for all stakeholders.

  • Manages, owns, tracks, escalates, communicates and coordinates problem resolution and escalation processes up to problem resolution.
  • Carries out tactical and operational plans including planning for growth, providing input for strategic planning, and anticipating requirements where possible.
  • Analyzes and defines network requirements and configurations, optimization, and support for network servers, routers and switches.
  • Prepares operational reports including trouble resolution and analysis, project status, equipment and network requirements/inventories.
  • Monitors network capacity and performance; diagnoses and resolves complex network problems.
  • Configures and maintains network backup and recovery procedures.
  • Adheres to IT policies and procedures (e.g., SDLC, COOP).
  • Assures the rigorous application of information security policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of network services.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Data Communications, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or related field with three (3) years of experience in enterprise technology leadership. Certifications in enterprise networking electronics and systems (voice and/or data) are preferred. Understanding of the ITIL operational best practices is preferred. Project management certification (PMI) or 1-2 years of large scale enterprise project management is preferred. Skills in reporting and ability to translate operational requirements into functional descriptions and conduct on-site surveys to determine communications upgrade alternatives.

Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered if candidate can effectively demonstrate progressively responsible experience in enterprise technology leadership. Certifications in enterprise networking electronics and systems (voice and/or data) are preferred. Understanding of the ITIL operational best practices is preferred. Project management certification (PMI) or 1-2 years of large scale enterprise project management is preferred. Skills in reporting and ability to translate operational requirements into functional descriptions and conduct on-site surveys to determine communications upgrade alternatives.

License: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence and ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in Maryland, DC and Virginia. Must have a CCNA, VoIP System Certification from a major voice communication system manufacturer, or other equivalent/applicable technical certification.
