Job description

At PayPal, Engineering Managers lead high-performing teams that build the systems powering millions of secure global transactions every day. As an Engineering Manager for Venmo's Identity Engineering team, you will drive the development of secure, scalable authentication and authorization solutions that underpin customer trust. You'll combine strong technical leadership with people management skills to deliver impactful business outcomes, foster innovation, and ensure engineering excellence. This role requires a balance of strategic thinking, hands-on technical guidance, and a passion for building and mentoring world-class engineering teams., * Directly manages software development projects (including program management) and execution through individual contributors. May also lead project teams across platforms or groups

  • Implements processes to drive strong operational hygiene for all components and systems within their group
  • Responsible for the delivery of projects, including quality and timeliness, that impact their domain and potentially one other
  • Demonstrates strong tactical ability by managing the roadmap for a scrum team responsible for technical issues of diverse scope where analysis requires an understanding of current business or tends
  • Competent at communicating technical issues with non-technical audiences
  • Analyzes multiple sources of information and identifies & resolves complex technical, operational, and organizational problems relating to software development.
  • Collaborates with direct team, managers in org, stakeholders such as Product Owners & PMO, * Lead the design, development, and delivery of identity and authentication services, ensuring security, scalability, and reliability.
  • Inspire and manage a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive a results-oriented culture with a strong focus on engineering excellence, execution, and craftsmanship as a customer champion.
  • Define team goals and technical priorities aligned with Venmo's identity roadmap and business objectives.
  • Partner with product managers, architects, and cross-functional leaders to deliver impactful outcomes.
  • Manage stakeholder planning and communications, ensuring transparency and alignment.
  • Provide technical guidance and participate in architecture discussions to influence system design and scalability.
  • Build, coach, and mentor engineering talent, setting high standards and elevating the overall technical bar.
  • Champion secure coding practices and advocate for remediation of technical debt.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to ensure services are highly available, reliable, and monitored effectively.

Requirements

  • 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience., * Proven experience leading backend development teams working with Python technologies, with ability to make architectural decisions and guide technical implementation.
  • Strong knowledge of micro services architectures, REST APIs, and distributed systems design, with ability to define team standards and best practices.
  • Capability to evaluate technical solutions and resolve complex challenges.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture principles (SOA, distributed/scalable architectures, message queuing systems).
  • Experience applying design patterns, SOLID principles, and software engineering best practices, with ability to mentor the team on these concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance urgency with quality, proactively resolve blockers, and hold stakeholders accountable.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and modern DevOps practices.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, capable of influencing at all organizational levels.
