Job description
The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is seeking an experienced Research Analyst to join the Science, Systems, and Sustainment Division (S3D).
This role is for a mission modeler who can design and execute analyses of military operations to evaluate munitions, sensors, tactics, and kill-webs.
You will participate in and eventually lead technically rigorous studies, develop new analytic approaches, and translate complex simulation results into defensible insights for senior decision-makers.
Specific research-related activities expected of this position include:
Responsibilities
- Independently identify and propose research efforts that address Department of War gaps and needs.
- Design and execute mission-level studies using frameworks such as AFSIM or STORM.
- Develop scalable analytic workflows to process and statistically interrogate simulation outputs.
- Produce high-impact reports and briefings to technical and non-technical audiences., You will work with peers who value methodological rigor, independence of thought, and technical excellence. Why IDA?
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative field with at least 3 years of relevant experience beyond academic work, or
- Master's degree in one of the above fields with at least 6 years of relevant experience beyond academic work.
- Demonstrated record of developing original analytic methods, applying statistical techniques to datasets, and delivering decision-relevant insights.
- Proficiency in writing production-quality code in C++, Python, or MATLAB.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in small, high-performing, research teams.
- Strong technical communication skills.
- Significant interest in Department of War issues and military operations.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
- Travel (domestic or international) may be required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.
The following experience is not required but will strengthen an application:
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep knowledge on one or more kill-web components (e.g., radar, weapon platforms, C2).
- Experience developing AFSIM plugins.
- Experience designing studies that influence operational concepts, requirements, or acquisition decisions.
- Active TS/SCI security clearance

We support transparency, equity, and fairness in our compensation program and provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range based on data-driven market analysis for each position. While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $113,353 - $277,494. Individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent's experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors.
