Job description

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring an Information Security and Network Specialist in Salem, Virginia. The Information Security and Network Specialist is responsible for maintaining and securing the organization's network infrastructure while implementing and enforcing information security policies. This hybrid role combines network administration tasks-such as configuring and monitoring network systems-with cybersecurity duties, including threat detection, vulnerability management, and compliance., * Monitor network performance to ensure high availability, low latency, and optimal user experience.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues, such as connectivity problems, bandwidth constraints, or hardware failures.
  • Manage and optimize LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VoIP systems to meet organizational needs.
  • Perform regular maintenance, including firmware updates, patch management, and network backups.
  • Document network configurations, topologies, and procedures for operational continuity
  • Conduct regular security assessments, vulnerability scans, and penetration tests to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity using SIEM tools (e.g., Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel) and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  • Respond to security incidents, such as malware, phishing, or unauthorized access, following established incident response protocols.
  • Implement and enforce security policies, including access controls, encryption, and endpoint protection.
  • Stay informed on emerging cyber threats and recommend proactive measures to enhance security posture.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks (e.g., PIC, HIPAA, NIST, CMMC 2.0) through audits and policy enforcement.
  • Support and administer the CMMC 2.0 Secure Enclave.
  • Work in coordination with team to achieve Continuous Improvement goals and objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements must be met for the Information Security and Network Specialist job, including regularly being required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Employee may occasionally lift/push/pull 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Requirements

Seeking candidates with a minimum four years of experience in network administration and/or information security; Experience with security tools, such as firewalls (Sonic Wall, Cisco ASA), VPNs, IDS/IPS, and endpoint protection platforms; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cyber security or equivalent work experience, required; Experience working with remote users, distributed teams, software and support vendors, preferred; Cisco and/or Microsoft network certification, preferred., * Proficiency with network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP) and Cisco hardware.

  • Knowledge of operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux) and virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) and their network/security configurations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to handle high-pressure situations.
  • Highly analytical, passion for details, and capable of translating analytical insights into action.
  • Must be able to effectively resolve issues in a timely manner using sound judgement, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and influencing skills.
  • Strong organization skills with ability to effectively prioritize (with changing priorities), multi-task, address issues quickly and professionally, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with strong work ethic.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to handle high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
