Job description

  • Execute fabrication, assembly, integration, testing, and inspection processes in accordance with detailed work instructions, blueprints, process sheets, and engineering drawings.
  • Perform precision machining operations including planning, layout, setup, operation, and adjustment of conventional and CNC machines (milling machines, lathes, and vertical machining centers).
  • Program and operate equipment using Acu-Rite or similar control systems.
  • Manufacture and assemble complex components by cutting, shaping, and machining metal, plastic, and optical materials to tight tolerances.
  • Perform optical and photonic assembly tasks, including:
  • Optical fiber splicing and recoating
  • Fabrication and inspection of photonic circuits
  • Integration of COTS optical equipment (e.g., power meters, laser sources, monitoring systems)
  • Execute mechanical builds and assemblies, including press-fitting pins and integrating multi-material components.
  • Conduct precision measurement and inspection using tools such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, microscopy, and profilometry equipment.
  • Interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Monitor machining parameters such as feed rates and speeds to ensure optimal performance and quality.
  • Maintain and operate specialized equipment including wire bonding, photomasking, epoxy application systems, and other optical fabrication tools.
  • Support equipment calibration activities in accordance with vendor or internal procedures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on machines and tools to ensure reliability and uptime.
  • Collaborate with engineering and management to meet cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Recommend improvements to materials, processes, and designs to enhance manufacturability and efficiency.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, organization, and safety in the workspace.
  • Support additional duties such as facility upkeep and continuous improvement initiatives as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 6+ years of relevant experience, OR
  • Associate's degree (or post-secondary education) with 2+ years of related experience, * Strong experience with machining, fabrication, and precision assembly processes
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and process documentation
  • Hands-on experience with milling machines, lathes, and CNC/vertical machining centers
  • Familiarity with Acu-Rite or similar machine control systems
  • Working knowledge of optical/mechanical assembly techniques and equipment
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and precision tolerancing
  • Ability to work with multiple materials and perform precision pinning and assembly
  • Experience with inspection and measurement tools and techniques
  • Solid mathematical skills applicable to machining and fabrication
  • High attention to detail, quality, and workmanship
