Job description
This full-time position is 40 hours per week and responsible for the operational health and lifecycle management of our Windows-based server infrastructure and Active Directory environments. As a senior level contributor, they will lead the planning and deployment of server architecture, security hardening, and specialized application delivery. This position reports to the Systems Manager and is a key member of the ITSS Systems team., * Configures, installs, monitors, and maintains Windows Server instances within virtualized environments (e.g., VMware vSphere or Azure).
- Performs senior-level administration of Active Directory (AD), including Group Policy (GPO) management, OU structures, and DNS/DHCP configurations.
- Maintains operating efficiency and security integrity; manages patch cycles, SSL certificates, and system backups.
- Leads the planning, design, and scheduling for major software and operating system updates to ensure modern support standards.
- Serves as a key participant in the ITSS Systems team and the Windows sub-group to align infrastructure with University goals.
- Provides high-level support, configuration, and maintenance for specialized Windows-based applications and their associated database integrations.
- Works with software vendors to troubleshoot complex issues and implements feature updates to keep services current.
- Responds to complex systems service tickets and provides expert-level consultation for departmental Windows-based needs.
- Prioritizes the creation and maintenance of technical documentation for system configurations and recovery procedures to ensure continuity.
- Engages in training, conferences, and continued education to stay current with industry best practices.

Requirements
The University of Minnesota Duluth's Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) unit is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented professional to manage our Windows server ecosystem and core directory services. The successful candidate will demonstrate a genuine passion for creating a seamless, secure, and reliable computing environment for students, faculty, and staff. We are looking for a technical specialist who prioritizes reliable infrastructure through proactive monitoring and disciplined systems administration, backed by excellent collaborative and communication skills., * Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least four (4) years of relevant IT experience; or a master's degree in a related field and at least two (2) years of relevant IT experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the administration, configuration, and security hardening of Windows Server environments and Active Directory., * Experience managing and supporting Windows Server instances within virtualized environments (e.g., VMware vSphere or Azure/Cloud-hybrid infrastructure).
- Proficiency in PowerShell or other scripting languages for the automation of routine server tasks, system monitoring, and reporting.
- Strong communication skills with a history of providing Tier 3 technical consultation to departmental stakeholders and non-technical users.
- Experience working within a Higher Education IT environment and familiarity with University of Minnesota security and data privacy policies.
