Job description

  • Follow supplied USMC operational scenarios, requirements, and architecture framework (DoDAF) for system development.
  • Review new system requirements decomposed from the USMC supplied operational requirements, and/or develop project high-level requirements with Navy Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) engineers.
  • Assist the senior systems engineer with the generation and documentation of a new system's architecture and design (power, RF, and functional block diagrams).
  • Assist the senior systems engineers with adherence to appropriate military standards via system requirements, design, and test (MIL-STD-461 (EMI), MIL-STD-464 (EMC), MIL-STD-704 (power), MIL-STD-810 (environmental), MIL-STD-882 (safety), MIL-STD-1250 and MIL-STD-7179 (corrosion), MIL-STD-1289 and MIL-STD-8591 (aircraft stores), and MIL-STD-1472 (human factors)).
  • Review system thermal, safety, and reliability analyses.
  • Review the system design features for the protection of Critical Program Information (CPI).
  • Assist the senior system engineers with new system design features to enhance USMC supportability and maintainability of the system.
  • Research and make recommendations on COTS components for system development based on system performance requirements, size, weight, and power constraints, etc.
  • Support system prototyping at the bench level, in order to technically evaluate potential COTS components for possible use in new systems and to then evaluate subsequent system design performance.
  • Run and develop subsystem Acceptance Test Procedures (ATPs).
  • Assist the senior systems engineers with properly configuring new systems, and checking the configuration of existing systems (hardware, configuration file settings, network IP addresses, and set up of communication and encryption devices).
  • Learn how to generate electrical drawings in AutoCAD electrical.
  • Support the review of electro-mechanical system drawings.
  • Support integration testing of system incremental releases.
  • Assist with the troubleshooting system failures and performance issues.
  • Support the use of key processes, such as the configuration management for system changes after the system baseline is established.
  • Support test's evaluation of system performance in the lab. Operate the system and test equipment to evaluate functional and RF performance against requirements.
  • Collate technical data in response to program sponsor data calls.
  • Review system design documentation and operational checklists, procedures, user manuals, training materials, and other technical publications for technical accuracy and completeness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 8+ years of relevant experience or Master's degree in a STEM related field with 6+ years of relevant experience

  • US citizen

  • Active Secret clearance

  • Experience with hardware and software integration (school and or work experience)

Preferred Qualifications for Sr. Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Knowledge of Electronic Warfare principles

  • Familiarity with Agile Development Methodology

  • Familiarity with Atlassian software development and collaboration tool set (Jira and Confluence)

  • Experience with Ethernet and TCP/IP

  • Experience with component selection for system development

  • Experience using mechanical and electrical drawings

  • Experience with RF receiver and RF jamming, software defined radios, and encryption systems

  • Experience working with RF test equipment

  • Experience with concurrent hardware and software development

  • Experience with military aircraft avionics and/or stores

  • Familiarity with referenced military standards

  • Familiarity with aircraft safety, supportability, maintainability, and reliability disciplines

  • Experience with AutoCAD electrical

  • Ability to work on your own initiative and learn independently once trained

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well in a close team environment

Benefits & conditions

Primary Level Salary Range: $142,200.00 - $213,400.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. Work as part of a Navy led team developing EW systems mainly for the USMC. This Systems Engineering position would support senior Navy system engineers with the development of EW systems. System development would primarily focus on hardware design, prototyping and testing, with integration of software and possible scripting.
