Job description
DOE's Office of Environmental Management Graduate Fellowship Program is seeking graduate fellows to work on some of the nation's greatest cleanup efforts. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work-life balance. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven interns come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!
The successful candidate will join other postdocs and graduate fellows as part of the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP). MSIPP is funded by the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). DOE-EM is working to cleanup legacy radioactive waste found in soil, groundwater, and underground storage tanks. All research aligns with DOE-EM's mission to safely immobilize and cleanup environmental legacy waste, focusing on cleanup of the Hanford Site which is one of the most complex DOE sites due to hazardous comingled contaminates. For more information, go to https://www.pnnl.gov/environmental-management-internship . To qualify you must attend a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) (for your undergraduate or graduate degree). MSIs are institutions of higher education enrolling populations with significant percentages of undergraduate minority students. Don't know if your school qualifies? Ask us! Please email em.internships@pnnl.gov to find out more.
We are seeking a motivated individual to join our EM Graduate Fellowship Program. Environmental remediation of legacy waste sites requires assessment of a wide range of environmental data types, spanning soil and groundwater sample analysis results, borehole geology, geophysical characterization, remediation system operational data, remote sending data, and more. It is critical to have suitable data management, processing, analysis, and visualization that can support communications and remediation decision making. Additionally, statistical, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) methods are playing an ever-increasing roll in providing knowledge and guidance based on environmental data and literature about past remediation decisions and implementations.
The selected candidate will work on projects related to environmental data processing, analysis methods, statistical modeling, data visualizations, and AI tool development. These projects aim to improve the understanding of complex datasets of soil and groundwater sample results from DOE-EM sites and to support communication and remediation decision-making with the objectives of improving remediation performance, decreasing remediation timeframes, and employing cost-efficient approaches. As part of this program, interns will have opportunities to turn data insights into actionable recommendations for environmental remediation.
Due to sponsor funding requirements outlined in the MSIPP-EM SOW, eligibility for this position is limited to candidates who graduated with their undergrad or masters at a Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).
Responsibilities Include:
- Work with a wide range of types and formats of environmental data spanning geophysics, groundwater chemistry, water levels, remote sensing, etc. to condition and analyze data to identify trends and insights to support environmental remediation decision-making.
- Apply statistical, machine learning, and artificial intelligence approaches and methods to develop insights to the remediation process or tools that can guide the remediation process.
- Manage and organize large datasets to maintain data integrity and accessibility, meeting data validation and quality assurance objectives.
- Collaborate with environmental/chemistry experts, engineers, software developers, and data scientists to understand specific project goals and execute on project/task delivery., This position involves access to sensitive systems and information. U.S. Citizenship is required.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is subject to the Department of Energy Unclassified Foreign Visits & Assignments Program site, information, technologies, and equipment access requirements.
Testing Designated Position
This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP).

- Candidates must have received a Master's degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university., * Degree in Data Science, with education (Minor or certificate) related to statistical analysis/modeling.
- Proficiency in math/data analytics and data science (e.g., statistics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning), including analysis using Tableau.
- Coding experience with Python, JavaScript, and SQL (R or VBA are a bonus).
- Experience with Amazon Web Services cloud computing, including serverless and AI services.
- Ability to work collaboratively in team settings, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with data/software quality assurance programs (e.g., NQA-1).
- Strong familiarity with and interest in cleanup/environmental management and associated challenges
