Job description
The IDMS Mainframe Consultant is responsible for the development, enhancement, and support of mission-critical mainframe applications supporting core business operations. This role provides deep technical expertise in mainframe COBOL applications, online and batch processing, and mainframe database technologies, with a strong focus on stability, performance, and production support.
The consultant works closely with cross-functional teams-including developers, QA analysts, operations, and business stakeholders-to maintain and modernize legacy systems while ensuring high availability and operational integrity. The role requires hands-on involvement in application development, problem determination, production support, and change management activities across multiple environments., * Design, develop, maintain, and support batch and online mainframe applications
- Analyze and resolve production issues, including root-cause analysis and long-term remediation
- Support online transaction processing, dialogs, and screen flows used in daily operations
- Develop and maintain JCL job streams, batch processes, and supporting utilities
- Participate in application deployments, promotions, backout, and recovery procedures
- Perform data analysis, impact assessment, and system troubleshooting across environments
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to deliver reliable solutions
- Document system behavior, processes, and technical solutions to support knowledge transfer
Requirements
- Strong experience in mainframe application development and support
- Proficiency in COBOL programming for both batch and online processing
- Expertise in mainframe database concepts, including schema design, data navigation, and utilities
- Solid understanding of z/OS environments, job scheduling, and workload processing
- Experience with change management, source control, and multi-environment promotion cycles
- Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex production issues independently
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred technical and professional experience
- Experience supporting regulated, high-availability, or mission-critical systems
- Exposure to system optimization, performance tuning, or modernization initiatives
- Ability to mentor team members and assist with knowledge transfer efforts
