Our firm is partnering with a large, enterprise-scale organization in the retail and consumer services sector to identify an experienced Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA). This role supports mission-critical data platforms that power high-volume transactions and analytics. The position offers an opportunity to work in a complex production environment while contributing to long-term data platform modernization initiatives., The Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator will be responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimizing SQL Server environments while supporting ongoing modernization efforts, including migration of SQL Server-based workloads to PostgreSQL. The DBA will play a key role in ensuring performance, availability, and reliability of database systems supporting business-critical applications. Key Responsibilities SQL Server Administration
- Administer and support SQL Server 2016+ environments in production
- Own database upgrades, patching, and overall lifecycle management
- Ensure reliability, security, and compliance of database platforms
Performance Tuning & Optimization
- Analyze queries, execution plans, and indexing strategies
- Identify and resolve CPU, memory, and I/O performance bottlenecks
- Proactively monitor and improve database performance
Backup, Recovery & High Availability
- Design and maintain backup and restore strategies
- Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and documentation
- Implement and manage at least one high-availability solution:
- Always On Availability Groups, clustering, or replication
Troubleshooting & Production Support
- Resolve critical production issues with minimal downtime
- Perform root cause analysis and implement preventative solutions
- Participate in on-call or escalation support as needed
SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
- Support, troubleshoot, and modify existing SSIS packages
- Optimize ETL workflows and address data pipeline failures
Database Migration Support
- Participate in database migration initiatives (schema, data, or platform)
- Support validation, testing, and cutover activities during migrations, * Hands-on PostgreSQL administration experience or active involvement in PostgreSQL migration projects
- Automation and scripting experience using:
- PowerShell and/or advanced T-SQL
- Job scheduling and database monitoring automation
- Experience supporting SSAS models or analytics and reporting workloads
- Familiarity with cloud-based database platforms such as Azure SQL or AWS RDS
- Understanding of:
- Database modernization initiatives
- Data modeling concepts and ETL design best practices
- CI/CD pipelines for database deployments
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server administration experience in production environments
- Strong expertise in SQL Server 2016+ including:
- Upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management
- Performance tuning, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis
- Backup, restore, and disaster recovery planning
- Experience supporting high-availability solutions such as:
- Always On Availability Groups, clustering, or replication
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve critical production database issues with minimal downtime
- Hands-on experience supporting and modifying SSIS packages, including ETL troubleshooting and optimization
- Experience participating in database migration initiatives, including:
- Schema and data migrations
- Platform migrations or modernization efforts
- Exposure to SQL Server to PostgreSQL migration efforts, including:
- Analysis of schemas, stored procedures, and dependencies
- Data type mapping and query conversion considerations
- Supporting data validation and cutover activities
