Why Is Software Documentation Still Static – And Why Modern Browsers Deserve Better

Software documentation is still largely static: no executable code, no interaction, no visualization — not because it has to be, but because it always has been. Meanwhile, modern browsers have become powerful platforms for running code, rendering rich media, and enabling collaboration. This session asks a simple question: why does our documentation ignore these capabilities?

In this deep dive, we rethink software documentation from first principles and challenge the idea that Markdown must remain a passive format. Instead of relying on build pipelines, static site generators, or complex toolchains, we explore an approach where documentation lives entirely in the browser. A Markdown file is simply fetched and interpreted, turning documentation into an interactive, executable learning space — without compilation or additional infrastructure.

The session is fully demo-driven. We will fork an existing JavaScript project live and transform its README into interactive documentation: executable code examples, reusable documentation modules, and shared learning components that can be composed across multiple documents. By treating documentation as a composable artifact — closer to a library than a static page — knowledge becomes reusable, testable, and easier to evolve.

We’ll also explore how browser-native capabilities such as visualization, presentation modes, and audio enable entirely new forms of interactive software documentation, from guided tutorials to collaborative learning environments. Attendees will leave with a concrete mental model and practical ideas for building documentation that developers don’t just read, but actively explore.
