Technical Architect - Senior

Department: Architecture / Technical Reports to: [Principal / Director of Architecture] Location: Washington State (in-office with periodic site visits) Employment Type: Contract / Temp-to-Hire - approx. 10-25 hours per week Path to Permanent: This role begins as contract or temporary work and may lead to a full-time, permanent position depending on workload., We are seeking an experienced Technical Architect to serve as the technical backbone of our project delivery. This role owns code compliance, drawing quality control, and technical detailing across both residential and commercial projects. The Technical Architect is the person who reviews drawings before they leave the office, catches issues before jurisdictions do, and keeps projects moving once they enter the technical and permitting phases. Most jobs are located in Washington State. Proficiency in complicated permit jurisdictions required.

This is a hands-on review and coordination role for someone who knows Washington State building and zoning codes deeply, can mark up a set of drawings with precision, and can write a clear, persuasive response to a plan reviewer’s comments. The engagement begins as contract or temp-to-hire work, with an expected workload of roughly 10-25 hours per week depending on permit activity and project pipeline. Hours fluctuate with submittal and review cycles, and the role may grow into a full-time, permanent position as workload increases.

Key ResponsibilitiesCode Review & Compliance

• Perform thorough building code review of residential and commercial drawing sets for compliance with applicable Washington State codes (IBC, IRC, WSEC, accessibility, and adopted local amendments).
• Review projects against local zoning codes and land use requirements across multiple Washington jurisdictions, flagging setbacks, height, FAR, parking, and use conflicts early.
• Stay current on code adoptions and amendments across the varied jurisdictions the firm works in, and advise project teams on jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Drawing Quality Control

• Conduct comprehensive QC reviews of construction documents for technical accuracy, coordination, completeness, and constructability.
• Produce clear, prioritized redlines and markups for the drafting team, and track them through to resolution.
• Review technical detailing (envelope, waterproofing, assemblies, transitions) and develop or refine standard details as needed.

Jurisdictional Coordination

• Prepare and manage jurisdictional response letters and comment-response narratives for plan check corrections, resubmittals, and appeals.
• Serve as a technical point of contact with building departments and plan reviewers to resolve issues and keep permits moving.

Project & Consultant Coordination

• Coordinate architectural consultants (structural, MEP, civil, envelope, accessibility, etc.) to ensure cross-discipline alignment within the drawing set.
• Keep projects moving once they reach the technical phase - anticipate bottlenecks, set review priorities, and drive sets toward permit and construction readiness.

Drafting & Team Management

• Perform hands-on drafting in Revit as needed to advance sets, resolve detailing, and support the team during peak workload.
• Manage the drafting team - assign work, set priorities, review output, and use redline review as a teaching tool to raise overall document quality.
• Develop and maintain office standards and drawing set standards (templates, sheet organization, detail libraries, naming conventions, QC checklists) and drive consistent adoption across projects.

Field Support

• Conduct occasional on-site job walk-throughs to verify field conditions, support construction administration, and confirm compliance.

Do you have experience in Zoning regulations?, Do you have a Master of Architecture?, * 5+ years of professional experience in architecture with a strong emphasis on technical documentation, code review, and QC.

• Demonstrated experience working across various Washington State jurisdictions for both residential and commercial code review.
• Working knowledge of Washington State adopted codes (IBC, IRC, WSEC), accessibility requirements, and local zoning / land use codes.
• Autodesk Revit proficiency is a MUST - must be able to navigate, review, mark up, and actively draft within models and sheet sets fluently.
• Strong technical detailing skills and an eye for constructability and coordination errors.
• Experience managing or directing a drafting team and developing drawing set / office standards.
• Proven ability to produce clear redlines and write professional jurisdictional response letters.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to coordinate consultants and communicate effectively with plan reviewers and project teams.
• Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage review priorities across multiple concurrent projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional architecture degree (B.Arch / M.Arch) and/or Washington State architectural licensure (or active path to licensure).
• Prior experience in a QC, technical lead, or technical architect capacity.
• Established relationships with Washington building departments and familiarity with their submittal and correction processes.
• Experience developing office standards, detail libraries, or QC checklists.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Primarily an in-office role with periodic travel to project sites within Washington State.
• Occasional site walk-throughs may require navigating active construction sites, including stairs, ladders, and uneven terrain.

$38 - $54 an hour - Part-time, Temp-to-hire, Contract
