Job description

The controls software designer is an experienced and disciplined position focused on all aspects of controls software design including PLC, HMI, and ancillary devices. The position is responsible for executing design with an approach that is efficient and complete. They will be responsible for verifying hardware design while creating the PLC/HMI programs. Once the systems have been built, they will support the commissioning team in correcting any software design errors or deficiencies. The controls software designer is expected to have continuous awareness of the effect their work has on all other disciplines in the engineering and build of the systems. The candidate should have some controls experience, knowledge of the industry and current technology, good communication skills and the ability to meet project requirements., Local travel to UTEC facilities and customer/supplier sites for meetings or support is rarely required. Travel requirements may vary based on project assignments and department workloads.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Windows?, Do you have a Bachelor of Science?, · Proficient with Allen-Bradley PLC’s (RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000) and HMI’s (FactoryTalk). Additional experience with Siemens and/or other languages is also beneficial.

· Must have a solid functional understanding of electrical and pneumatic controls systems.

· Must be able to read, comprehend, and follow/implement specific customer standards relating to controls design.

· Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams and device data sheets.

· Must be able to commission / debug automation systems.

· Must be able to use testing and metering devices.

· Must be familiar with windows operating systems and software.

· Must have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Communication, Organization and Quality

· Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

· Must be able to interface with Mechanical Design, shop trades and customers.

· Works directly with hardware designers/follow-up team and project management providing software support.

· Must have a professional demeanor, solid interpersonal skills with good written and oral communication capabilities.

· Assists in helping monitor project delivery dates, changes, and standards with both in-house and outsourced designs.

· Ensures engineering compliance and company awareness with all customer specifications.

· Develops standardized software tools and designs under the direction of the Software Engineering Supervisor.

· Must adhere to the Quality System and participate in continuous improvement.

· Must understand and follow safety & environmental regulations and identify safety/environmental concerns.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years working controls experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

Language Skills

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD annotations and tolerances.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure

manuals., The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
