Job description

Construction R&D in the AECO (Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations) organisation of Autodesk is focused on developing and enhancing technologies and methodologies to improve the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of construction projects. This involves research and development in areas such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins, IoT integration, and advanced data management systems. Overall, construction R&D aims to drive industry transformation, improve project outcomes, and meet the evolving needs of stakeholders in the AECO sector.

As a Principal Engineer for the Construction R&D team, you will serve as the primary technical authority for our core web platform. You will define the architectural vision that bridges complex backend micro-services with high-performance user interfaces, ensuring our ecosystem is scalable, accessible, and resilient. Beyond hands-on development, you will act as a strategic partner to product leadership, translating R&D initiatives into robust, highly available full-stack solutions. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of steering technical strategy across multiple teams and thrives in a fast-paced, agile environment where they can mentor the next generation of engineering talent.

Responsibilities

  • Architectural Leadership: Lead the design and development of high-quality, secure, and performant front-end architecture (e.g., Micro-frontends and Server-Side Rendering strategies)
  • Strategic Planning: Work closely with Product Managers and UX Designers to translate vision into technical roadmaps, breaking down complex UI/UX requirements into executable work streams.
  • Engineering Standards: Define and enforce frontend best practices, including state management patterns, component modularity, and testing strategies (Unit, Integration, E2E)
  • System Integrity: Identify technical debt and architectural risks in the frontend stack; propose and execute long-term mitigation strategies
  • Mentorship & Culture: Mentor senior and junior developers, foster a culture of continuous learning, and lead deep-dive code reviews to ensure world-class code quality
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Cultivate consensus across engineering, design, and product teams to ensure unified user experience
  • Operational Excellence: Participate in an on-call rotation for high-priority frontend incidents, ensuring the 24/7 availability and performance of our platform

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science or a related technical field or above
  • 8+ years of professional experience building scalable, consumer-facing web applications on a scale
  • Proven track record of leading teams (3+ engineers) and influencing technical direction without direct authority
  • Expert-level mastery of TypeScript, JavaScript and ReactJS
  • Deep understanding of the DOM, browser APIs, and frontend performance optimization
  • Strong experience in integrating with AWS services (Lambda, S3, SQS)
  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs in a micro services environment
  • Experience with Java, Spring boot/Node
  • Experience with modern build tools (Webpack), CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks (Jest, Playwright, or Cypress)
  • Exceptional ability to write technical design documents (RFCs) and present complex architectural concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Benefits & conditions

Salary is one part of Autodesk’s competitive compensation package. Offers are based on the candidate’s experience and geographic location. In addition to base salaries, our compensation package may include annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.
