Job description

The Dirt/Earthwork Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for excavation, grading, site development, underground utilities, and earthmoving projects. This position analyzes plans and specifications, performs quantity takeoffs, solicits subcontractor and supplier pricing, and develops cost estimates to support successful project bidding., * Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents.

  • Perform earthwork quantity takeoffs, including cut/fill analysis and material calculations.
  • Estimate costs for excavation, grading, hauling, utilities, erosion control, and site development.
  • Obtain and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations.
  • Prepare complete bid proposals and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to verify project scope and constructability.
  • Identify project risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving alternatives.
  • Maintain estimating databases, production rates, and historical cost information.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
  • Support project handoff after contract award.

Requirements

  • Experience estimating earthwork, excavation, grading, and civil construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
  • Knowledge of earthwork production rates, equipment capabilities, and construction methods.
  • Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates while meeting bid deadlines.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with GPS machine control and digital terrain models.
  • Familiarity with AGTEK, HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or similar software.
  • Understanding of mass haul analysis and cut/fill balancing.
  • Knowledge of DOT, commercial, and residential site development projects.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 3+ years of estimating experience in earthwork or heavy civil construction preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments.
